Hi,
i'm trying to recall the model of a stratocaster my friend had stolen. I would like to surprise him with one someday if I can track one down.
It had a black body and matching black headstock with a spaghetti logo, gold hardware, gold pickguard and a rosewood neck. He can't recall the model because we were so young but he claims he bought it new between 1999-2001.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Yep, so far it's Mission Impossible - for my browser(s), the facebook link demands a sign-in. So once again:
Quote:
First you need to upload your pics to the internet. Use a pic hosting site (imgur, imgbb or such - avoid photobucket) or some common web framework like e.g. facebook, googlephotos - whatever you're familiar with.
The important thing is that the web site provides you with a pic address - that's the one starting with 'http' and ending in '.jpg'.

Copy the pic address, and use the IMG-command (visible when you write a message) on the forum.

Preview your post so everything is OK.

On the guitar; Bob Dylan played one which might fit the description - although the hardware plating color is hard to judge in web pics. Google 'dylan clapton newport 1999' for pics. Dylan fanatics might even know which model it was.

In general, a US-made Strat with gold and a matching headstock would suggest a Limited Edition/FSR/Dealer Select or such special model run. Those aren't in Frontlines and may be missing from general FMIC price lists, too.
Fender Japan has made several matching headstockers - e.g. the Ventures model from that era, but it had block inlays and the band logo.

And the time limit (just when FMIC did the AmStd/AmSeries flip) is problematic...
Do you have any memory of the price class?

That's not the one, this one had a gold pickguard and hardware, and was made in the late 90's - early 2000's I believe.

Ok, let's start... All just opinions and guesswork.

21 frets says it's not an AmStandard model from that era.
The 12th fret dots spacing says it's not an ST-62 MIJ.

I'm thinking Mexico, Classic 60's model and some Special Edition.
With the pic you posted, it's hard to tell if the hardware is gold or chrome.
Same with this Bob&EC pic, but the pg (here: pearloid) comes out a lot better:

Edit: Why the second topic on the same guitar..? (I think you can delete the other one if you do it before anybody answers.)

Jswinns, do you remember if there was a hole in the headstock for truss rod adjustments?

To me, that looks like narrow 12th fret inlay spacing. With 21 frets and 6-screw bridge that would point toward a special edition/FSR Mexican Standard Fat Strat.

Also, we have to keep in mind that "bought new in '99/'00" doesn't necessarily mean it was built in '99/'00.

Stores often have a guitar hanging on the wall for a year or two or even longer before the right customer walks in and buys it.

So there's some small chance it's a special edition AVRI'62 from before they corrected the 12th fret inlay spacing. (Although I don't recall them ever doing HSS AVRI's.)

Dawg, I missed the obvious HSS...
On a standard MIM Fat Standard, the logo isn't a spaghetti.

One double check: the guitar is in its original factory condition in the pic, no mods?

If a dealer orders an FSR run with painted matching headstocks, it's possible they could specify spaghetti logos.
---------------------
We're all pretty sure this wasn't a standard catalog model. If it's an FSR there were probably only 250 of them made.

So even if someone can identify it, the chances of Jswinn finding one for sale are very slim. Even knowing the model and searching eBay, Reverb, Craigslist would depend on the seller knowing the model name.

Thanks for all your help.
I bet it was a MIM. The truss rod was at the neck (im pretty sure).
It was all original. It baffles me because my friend only paid $700 at the time, so that would leave me to believe it wasn't a rare/custom-short run model. I must've been a special ordered classic series that ended up on the shelf..
Hmm

Narrow fret inlays, 6-screw trem, 21 frets, HSS, and headstock truss rod adjust indicates Mexican Standard Fat or Mexican Deluxe Fat series.

Any dealer willing to order a batch of guitars can have a Factory Special Run (FSR) made for them. I seem to recall that for Mexican models the minimum batch is 250.

An FSR is a "mix and match" type thing. Special colors and matching headstocks ok, but parts have to be normal production parts.

FSR's aren't particularly exotic. I bought mine because it was relatively cheap based on the specification.

As they are a dealer purchase they tend to be priced lower than comparable catalogue models as they don't want them hanging around.

It is unusual for a dealer to hit a sweet spot in specification, which isn't offered as standard, that makes it particularly desirable. I bought mine as it had a two post trem (which, at the time, I thought was better) being unusual on a MiM (at the time).

Blew up & enhanced the pic as best I could, still can't decide the hardware color or see if the fuzzy something in the headstock is just a reflection or the plastic truss rod opening.
Unless someone who's owned a guitar just like that turns up, I believe this is as far as the forum help goes.
Time to ask the band members if there are more pics, or start trailing where that guitar is now.

I'd say that's a safe bet.
