Hello all,
New to the forum, but not to Fender! Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong area. Hoping that someone can provide some troubleshooting advice. I've assembled guitars before and wired them up from scratch, but never really did any troubleshooting of problems. I'd love to become a better amateur guitar tech. I offered to check this guitar out for a friend and I'm a bit stumped.

Issue: Squire Strat is outputting no sound, not even a buzz/hum.

Short background: My friend's kids took this guitar apart multiple times to paint it's body and pickguard. The only glaring issue I noticed right away was that the ground wire to the tremolo claw was missing, so I replaced that first thing.

So far I've tried some various suggestions I found online such as... used my multi-meter (set to 2000k ohm) to check each Pot... each tone pot tested around 500... the volume tested just 5. I thought maybe the volume was bad so I removed it and it tests in the 500 range when removed from the guitar. I took that to mean it's functional and soldered it back in. Should I get something other than 5 from the volume pot when it's wired in?

I then moved on to the pickups... each tested around 5 as well. The number remained steady and did not fluctuate (I read that a steady number is good and fluctuating number is bad).

Not sure where to turn just yet. Any suggestions are welcome! I understand that it's not an expensive guitar, but it's still in playable condition otherwise My friend would like to learn on it himself now that those same kids who destroyed it are older and moved out.

This topic was in the approval process for a couple of days and I actually figured it out on my own already. One of my coworkers kids had soldered a ground wire to the output jack's hot lead. Easy fix, once I finally noticed!!

I can either delete this thread or leave it up as a lesson for others to be more observant than I was.

+1!

There isn't anybody here who hasn't screwed the pooch at one time or another as regards to troubleshooting an issue. Those of virtue don't fear fessing up whenever the situation warrants it. I suspect you fit that category as well.

Yup. Lessee... control cavity cover screw passing into wiring hole (and the wire!), check.
Didn't notice that tone pot spun while tightening and pushed the bare p/u shield into the volume pot, check.
Control cavity too tightly packed, stuff in pickups and screw down, bare p/u shield (different guitar) hits p/u selector, check.

I really need to heat-shrink those Duncan pickup leads.
