Hey guys. Sorry if this post is misplaced, but you guys are experts, thats why I come here.

I am thinking about buying a Squier and upgrading it with new pickups and some other stuff.

I would love it to sound like John Mayers ‘The Black One’ strat. Like the tone of his live perfomances of Slow dancing in a burning room.

My questions to you guys are:

Which pickups would get me the closest to this tone? CS fat 60’s?

What other upgrades would you guys make to a squier?

Thank you

Hi & welcome.
I have no idea of your background, experience etc; but it's your first post here and I'm going on what you write. Apologies, because this is going to feel a little rough...

Sounding like (insert any famous player's name here) is in general not a question of equipment. There are numerous examples where those players use something quite different from their normal gear, and still sound like themselves. IMHO, in the end it boils down to personality and practice.

In your situation, I'd suggest getting a sixties model Strat (Classic MIM, Classic Vibe Squier, MIJ, maybe even a Jimmie Vaughan...), and keeping it stock but giving it a real good (professional) setup. Your other gear should allow the mayerstyle sounds; googling brings plenty of suggestions to compare with your budget.
After that, it's just thousands of hours playing - and I'd guess when you reach the point of playing & sounding like JM, you'll have a style of your own you like more.

I saw a vid of Stevie Ray Vaughan playing a Squier through a Fender solid state amp. He sounded like SRV.

But gear does help. It wasn"t the best Stevie ever sounded...

Mayer favors mid-scooped pickups. "Fat" anything is the wrong approach to Mayer tone. His Signature "Big Dippers", CS'69s, or similar aftermarket pickups would get you closer than Fat'60s.

A big part of John's tone is his amps. He favors Dumbles and Two Rocks. But he sounded great at Clapton's Crossroads festival in Dallas, and it looked like he was plugged into one of Eric's Tweed Twins.

Again, while Stevie made a Stage 160 sound fabulous, most people who are starting out overlook the importance of the amp. A great guitar through a bad amp won't sound as good as a bad guitar through a great amp.

(The Stage 160 isn't a bad amp -- it's pretty decent really. But some cheap little solid-state practice amp with a 6" or 8" speaker will not get you stellar tones.)
