Hello everyone! :) I am new to the forum and a huge fender die hard and trying to get into the collectible market now that I can afford it - sort of... I am looking at the Ron Wood guitars and prices seem to vary between $800-25,000! Is it a question of authenticity, model, used/not used, charity? What drives the price of these!! I have access to a one of four Strat signed guitar but I am worried the seller is asking too much. Can the experts enlighten me? :?

Thx!!
Cedric

Ronnie Wood's personal owned Strats? Other people's Strats that Ronnie autographed? Details about the Strats?

There are all sorts of factors in value. Vintage vs modern. Documentation of what tours/recordings they were used for. He's owned replicas of Fenders.

While Ronnie has an important place in rock history, celebrity ownership and autographs have variable value. An autographed vintage guitar, even if it was used onstage or in the studio with the Faces or the Stones, might be considered devalued by some collectors. Others might pay a premium for it.

Collecting for profit is a very risky investment, especially if the guitar is being sold at a "value added" price because it's "collectable". The only reasonably safe investment is if you recognize it has collectable value but the seller doesn't, and isn't asking a premium for it.

And that would make you an absolute prime target for fakers.

Because "collectable" guitars have higher prices than standard guitars it is worth the effort to fake them.

If you try to up sell a standard guitar the margins can be tiny. But if a miscreant can get a cheap guitar and sell it as a "collectable", with little work, then they are laughing.

Your only defence is knowledge and as much of it as you can carry. If someone is trying to sell you a guitar of specific history then you need to confirm or disprove that history from other sources. Just because that guitar might look a bit like a guitar in a picture is no guarantee that it is anything more than a guitar which looks like the one in the picture.

Probably all and any of those reasons, depending on the guitar.
How about some examples of what you're after - the forum is usually quite reliable in spotting fakes, scams and such.

And as a personal opinion, getting in the collectable market as a means of increasing one's assets doesn't differ much from any other form of gambling.

Pretty much.
I would never look at a collection of anything as being an investment.
It may or may not be profitable in the long run, most likely not. When Mother in Law died, she had a HUGE "Barbie" collection. Some of the dolls were quite [strike]valuable[/strike] expensive if you were to buy one from a local dealer, but if you turn around and were to try to sell it, it would be worth no more than 20% of what you just got conned into paying.

Of the 30 or so guitars that I own or have owned, only my two mid-90s G&Ls have any decent value, and still likely less than they sold for originally (but more than I paid). If I still had my '78 Antiqua, it might be worth around the cost of a current MIA top-end production model ($2k+)... but these have all been regular production guitars... not even custom shop.

High-value collectibles like those owned by a specific artist, or appeared at a specific show like Woodstock or Monterey? Yikes... these are one-of-a-kind instruments that may or may not even still exist, and if they do, their price will be based on the popularity of the musician and the infamy of the show. The guitar that Ron Wood handed to Bob Dylan during the Live Aid show? That would probably auction for well over a million.

Confirming and tracing the authenticity of these items is a big problem, and it can cost you a few hundred (or thousand) just to pay to do the research or to have someone verify the background.
This really is something that you would want to "intern" or "apprentice" with an existing collector in your area. *I* would have no idea where to begin if I wanted to "get into collecting".

If you go to an estate sale and a grieving widow is selling her late husband's '59 Les Paul for $300, that's probably a good investment.

Even if it's just a very good copy you'll make a profit.

As long as you can tell the real thing or a good copy from a cheap Chibson that cost $200 when it was new.

My biggest fear is that some day, my wife will sell my guns and guitars for what I told her I paid for them :D

Collecting for your enjoyment is fine. I have close to fifty guitars though none are "collectable". I used to work with a man that was the "beer can collectors" president for our state. He told me his collection was worth a lot of money, but then said that he never paid a penny for any can in his collection and never would. That should tell you something before you start investing in collecting to ever think about a profitable return on your investment. Think of collecting the same way a person enjoys spending $200 for a round of golf.
