I have 7 Strats, among them a like new, graffiti yellow, Deluxe Powerhouse that I seldom play. Every six months when I take it out of the case it seems to have a very bad truss rod rattle. I've played with it in the past with mixed results. Done countless Google searches along with checking string height, string radius, truss rod adjustment, nut height, number of winds on the turner posts, on and on. The buzz seems to come from the neck about the 5th fret. Well, today I put a small amount of 3and1 oil on the tuner posts where they go in the grommet and also a little oil on the roller string trees. The buss is gone. I believe the string trees are the culprit. Hope this is helpful to anyone having the same issues, before they damage a truss rod trying to fix an elusive buzz. Has anyone else had problems with roller string trees?

You can't damaged a truss rod if you know what you are doing.

I've experienced rattles/buzzes that seemed to come from a specific area, but then turned out to be originating in a totally different place.

Really weird and frustrating. And then when I finally discovered the source of the noise I was baffled why/how the noise was manifesting in a different location.

I did experience a rattling/knocking truss rod once. But it just needed a tiny tiny turn of the adjuster nut to cure -- not enough to make a measurable difference in relief.

I bought a second hand strat many years ago.
Strat make a rattle from the truss rod. It take me time to find where it come from.

The truss nut need to be tightened very slightly not enough to change neck bow.
After 2 weeks, rattle appear and I must tightened one more time.
It take few months to fix truss rod .
I never had rattle after.

I'm able to fix guitar and amp since many years and I have all tools
