As the title says, I have a friend who says this is a 70s strat. I cannot see a serial number anywhere. Here are the pics:

Partscaster.
Not 70s since no bullet trussrod adjust. :D

Yep, not a 70s. Looks like the serial number has been removed from the back of the headstock, and a relic job has been (over)done.

Any time the serial number is missing/removed, its likely that someone wants to portray it as something its not.

For Sure a partscaster.

If you're buying it, I wouldn't pay too much.

I don't particularly care for the faux relic job.

It doesn't look natural at all.

Agreed Partscaster.
70s would have a larger headstock, different lettering, and a bullet truss rod.
It would also have a 3-bolt neck plate with a microtilt.
Tuners are incorrect.
Hard to be sure, but the 12th fret inlays look to be too far apart, it may not even be a Fender neck.

It looks "more correct" for a pre-CBS with the smaller headstock and "Spaghetti" logo, but I don't know if the 11-screw pickguard overlapped with the smaller headstock in the mid 60s or not... but again, no serial number on the neck plate or headstock just screams "Partscaster"
70s from '75 and up would have had a black pickguard, pickup covers, and knobs.

This is a nice example of a 1979. Earlier models would be the same, but with white plastics:

I'll agree with the above that it's not a US Strat from the seventies.
On the 'what is it' diagnose, I'd like to see pics of the neck joint, neck end, routings, electronics underside (...).

One note on the tuners; one seldom sees that much zigzag; they should be in a nice straight line.

Partsocaster.

Minor nitpick regarding several of the replies. Bullet truss adjuster and 3-bolt neck started in '72.

But '70~'72 did have the big headstock with the big bold black logo, and narrow 12th fret dot spacing. So that's not a '70s neck. (And some details convince me it's not a Fender neck at all.)
-----------------
It's entirely possible it was assembled back in the '70s, so your friend may be correct that it's a '70s "Strat". But the Fender factory didn't put those parts together.

And fair enough, I should have been more accurate too. 3-bolt, Bullet adjuster, and Zamac/Mazak 1-piece cast bridge were phased-in in '71.

By '72 all Strats had all 3 "improvements". In '71 some Strats had none, 1, 2, or all 3 changes.
------------------
The saddles on the guitar in question are stamped "Fender Fender". That's mid '80s or later, but it's possible those were changed at a later date.
