Jeff personaly i wouldn't go with the coil switching or mini bucker options. switches to my ear never sound like a good singlecoil they approximate a brash p90 at best and either enhance the bass or treble responce of the pickup. Mini buckers never sound like full blown humbuckers, although i prefer the sound of minibuckers and use em in 2 of my guitars they just dont sound like old paf's regardless of what the hype says.
You said your recording for yourself, not public release so maybe the 2 highway one's idea could be a winner. It is certainly a good guitar and well capable of studio work.

I have to agree with that. If Jeff buys a HSS and doesn't like the H, he can always buy a new pickguard, another S and convert it to SSS without much trouble (and not too much cost).

I bought (and played) my first HSS strat almost 3 years ago (come Labor Day). It works well for me because I don't miss the bridge single coil very much. I mainly use the neck pickup for all of my "straty sounding" songs. Having the Humubucker in the bridge position, let's me do "non-straty sounding" songs with the same Strat ... so, for me, it's like having two guitars in one, a single coil beast and a humbucked beast.

I bought an HSS about 8 years ago, and while it was cool having the bucker there, the stock model (the DH-1, I think) didn't have enough bite and brightness for me. I ended up swapping out all of the pups--the two S's became Hot Vintage Noiseless, and the bucker became a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Plus. Sounds better than before--more output, but still nice and crisp and clean.

Bottom line, I guess, is that an HSS would probably do you right, especially if you're primarily doing recording. If it doesn't have the tone you want, swapping the pups is always a good option.

What you should do get an SSS and then, if you feel that the tone isn't what you want, replace the bridge p-up with a humbucker (which I think would be easier to do, than vise virsa)

Hmm.. my first (and only.. so far!) Strat is a HSS, and being my first electric guitar I chose the fat Strat because of the increased versatility of being able to get both Stratty and humbuckery tones from the one piece. I figured I'd learn to play and learn too what styles I prefer, and then get more specific models later on once I really know what I want and need. Predicting my own serious case of GAS, you see, and will be happy to make this a self-fulfilling prophecy!

In your case, if you simply can't afford two guitars but need both tones, I guess you'll have to go HSS. You can always swap out pups to get the tones you need, but from the middle pup north it's still all Strat. Then again, as someone else mentioned, for the cost of one MIA plus extra pups you might be able to afford two Highway Ones for the same change, SSS and HSS!

My own personal opinion would be to go S-S-S and start saving a good double humbucker guitar.

+1
