Hi all, I'm new here. I have a question regarding an MIM Strat I may be picking up tomorrow and would like someone (or all that read this) to voice an opinion on authenticity, or at least if something looks funny. Is the GOLD logo appropriate for this model year, and note the p/u covers and control knobs are black. The current (who is the original) owner says its all stock except for the pick guard. Photos attached as I have them. Thank you all in advance.

Tough call without seeing under the pickguard.
The neck looks to be correct, but that doesn't mean that the body is authentic.

The color of the plastics... it MAY have been made with all black plastics and the PO swapped the pickguard for white, but the PU selector knob and tremolo arm tip would match the knobs and pickup covers.
More likely, it shipped in white and the knobs and pickup covers were changed.

One thing that concerns me is the lack of any apparent woodgrain in the center of the burst pattern, it looks almost like melamine... But that may be correct for MIM 2-tone of that year.

I would give Fender a call first thing in the morning and ask what body/plastics color originally shipped with that serial number.

Thank you Rich, I noticed that as well. I do own an American Standard Tele in tobacco burst and the grain is quite noticeable through the finish. The pics I posted are all I've seen of this strat so far, but I feel its worth a half hour drive to take a closer look. I will call Fender in the morning to confirm serial number and appointments. I'll follow up with this post tomorrow with how things turn out. Thanks again!

Poked around some image searches for 2007 MIM and I am seeing some very similar paint patterns. Apparently alder bodies, which doesn't have the bold grain of ash.

This link shows the only one I found with black pickup covers, but it does have white knobs.... but the tuners on your example are more recent.
I couldn't find anything with all black plastics.
But either way, you definitely have a mismatch between your knobs and the PU selector knob.

There's the Fender Product Registration Database
That serial number comes back as (MIM) "Standard Stratocaster® (1991-2006)", the pic shows a (Brown) Sunburst with all white plastics.
So most likely, it's legit, not all original.

Didn't even think about using that as a search device.
I plugged in my new MIM bare neck and it came back not found.

"Bare neck", as in a replacement part, neck only?
I don't know if those are fed in the F-Prod-Reg-Database at all by Fender. There is the DIY/Add manuallypossibility, though.
(PS: Would someone come up with a short, simple nickname for that database - please..?)

Anyways, the database seems to cover MIA instruments reasonably well (from 1993ish on), MIMs mostly, but made-in-elsewheres only with some luck. And there seems to be a delay with the newborn ones - again, shorter with MIAs than others.

So, I just picked it up... Great condition, I'll be disassembling when I get home and post some pics. Rich, you were right about the pick guard and controls. The button on the 5 switch was originally black along w/the pick guard. The pickups are original. Not bad for 200 (originally posted for 250).

Just to follow up on this thread ... disassembled the whole guitar, cleaned thoroughly, full set up (even honed a few sharp fret ends), and restrung.. I have to say, I've had to do more work for a few guitars 5-10x the price of this MIM. I figured I'd spare you all addt'l pictures of the tear down as it is ONLY an MIM Strat. Rich, re: the wood grain... it actually has beautiful, although subtle, veining visible throughout the finish. I'd include my photos but evidently this forum does not allow proprietary images. Truly, the only issue I had with this guitar was the plastic truss rod sheath end (and I'll admit, there was a lot of S*!T in there, although I was able to easily adjust the neck for slightly heavier strings). Otherwise, it actually is not a bad specimen. Sounds great through my Hot Rod Deluxe (which I also picked up today...couldn't help myself - the guy mentioned he had one to sell for 300 and I had to jump on it, but... he accepted 200 bucks (which is all I had left on me). It was definitely a good day!). Thanks guys for all your input.

Joe

For $200?
A replacement neck would have cost you that, so even if it is a Partscaster you would have done just fine.
Sounds like you snagged a very nice instrument, and I do like the color contrast... Or you could go for the SRV look and go black... or even tortoise with white pickup covers.

You can post your own images, but you need to host them somewhere like Imgur or your own web server that allows hotlinking.

Yeah..., $200. Although, I'm even more stoked about the Hot Rod amp... I haven't had a tube amp since the first "amp" my father gave me - he made it out of an old magnavox console record player from the '60s - this thing was HUGE... like, living room huge, (1978, I was 12 when he gave it to me w/ my first electric guitar that Christmas). He broke it down, fashioned an amp out of it w/ a single 15" speaker {he was an electrician}, he would ask me for weeks before he'd given it to me that Christmas to "give him a hand working on something". I had no idea what the hell he was doing at the time and was pretty much an a$$hole 12 year old. I had NO IDEA what I had. I'd kill for that thing now. I'll set an account up to drop some pics.

Yah; that's a cool Dad. He wanted you to put some of your own "hands on" with it, so you'd have sentimental feelings (and a great story) for it. We were all young and dumb at points of our life, and I'm sure you're kicking yourself all the time for getting rid of it. Great story. 8)
