MIM players always trying to justify their cheap guitars
when they know in their hearts that they just aren't as good
As USA models. Everyone know this. The old adage you
get what you pay for is correct. I started out with a squire!
I now have USA strat deluxe. Why? I want to have a nice guitar
that I'd keep forever and pass to my children!
The squire worked, albeit always needed tuned, wasn't as slick,
pickups were not as good tonally, wasn't as pretty but it did work!
Buy what you can afford and then gravitate to what you can truly
appreciate for the masterpiece that a USA model is......

Yeah, the MIM's are decent guitars. They're a steal at $300. But there's no way they compare to a Am Std. or better. I mean if the MIM was every bit the equal of an American Deluxe, who'd buy one?

amen to that, like i said i own both american and mexican i get good sound out of both them, but for the guys who are putting down the quality of these mexican strats i wonder if they are slamming them because they are made in mexico by mexicans, how many of these guys drive cars or trucks built out side of the USA, this thread sounds kind of bias against mexican built guitars, just remember your american built strat was assembled by fender the same company who opened a factory in mexico so when you talk trash about MIM guitars your talkin trash about the company who put this plant in mexico.

I voted MIM because....well I own a MIM (Made in 2000). It has been my Stock #1 all these years and it just keeps on kicking. This year I plan on replacing the saddles to keep from breaking so many strings.

I am also in the market for a new Strat w/ Texas Specials and am thus seriously considering going south of the boarder again and getting a "Roadhouse" Strat- I played one and I really like the feel and tone of it. I had considered getting a Hwy 1 and installing the Texas Specials after market...but I just can't comfortably spend that much $$$ and justify it to my wife and kids.

I can see the advantage of a MIA....But when I am up at a gig and playing with my band. The drunks in the bar could give a S&*@ if my Strat was made in the USA or not. They just want to listen .

Keep it real folks-

The Freeze

It's like any argument. There are three sides to consider.

1. Those that say MIM are junk
2. Those that say MIM are the greatest thing since sliced bread
3. The truth (something in between)

Agreed. How about this?
1) The MIMs are great.
2) The MIAs are also great, and contain some better ingredients over the MIMs here and there, depending on the model.
3) The MIAs will hold their value better over the MIMs because they are built in lower numbers and will always be perceived as "higher quality"

Now, can we all finally just get along??

(PS: Thanks, Orvilleowner, for turning me on to Orville guitars!)

It's not about a 'cheap' guitar. It is about the better value. And many of us just happen to think the the MIM, as a less expensive guitar, is a better value.

In my mind, 'cheap' implies a lack of quality. And since I don't think that the MIMs are lacking in quality, I don't see them as 'cheap'.

Hey Freeze, You talk about trying to justify spending $$$ on a Highway 1 as opposed to a MIM Strat. Is the price difference that big? It's not like the difference between a Custom Shop and MIM. The way I've seen it here is that I have rarely seen a MIM post who dosn't modify their guitars with better parts. So whats the point ? by the time you do all these add-ons you could have spent that money on a genuine MIA Stratocaster.Weather you all want to admit it or not the Highway ! is "MADE IN AMERICA"So yeah MIM is cheaper but if you dropping another couple hundred in mods wheres the deal?

Okay - possibly. But maybe ... the MIA players are always trying to justify their more expensive guitars. Hmmm.

(personally, though, I think it is n-e-i-t-h-e-r)

Have you checked "Orville by Gibson" at Wikipedia? The information is pretty accurate there (the same can't be said for other sites that claim to have ObG info).

You can find those guitars at eBay or from Japanese music stores. The most popular for US customers seems to be Ishibashi (where I bought my 3 ObGs).

And here I thought this was going to be a nice thread on the reasons why certain players like MIM while others like MIA. I highly doubt that many here would be able to tell the difference in a blind 'taste test'. And I thought the whole 'Gibson vs. Fender' arguments were kinda lame.

as you all ponder buying outside of america ask yourself if you would like to keep your job or would it upset you if there was a forum discussing sending your job down to mexico. you may want to save for a couple more weeks and buy american. it is a small price to pay for trend that may someday save the job that puts food on YOUR tabel. i am proud of the fact i own an american strat and am glad fender still makes them here. i wish i could find a pair of shoes that were.

ps - im not just a flag waver. i work for an american manufacturer.
