Doc, that makes me sad, almost a horror story but that was the times we lived in. I guess that is was easier for them to just replace the body instead of refinishing. I can hear them now, " He won't know the difference" but they were wrong you found them out later. We all (with any age on us ) have stories of equipment that we let go and wish we had back. I know I do. Thanks for sharing this with us. 8)

Great story. Everytime I tell it to serious guitar people, the response is always the same. Disbelief.

Enjoy your new enterprise.

USA...Summer 1969; "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times!"
"Vietnam, Woodstock, Apollo XI, aside, remember where Fender was at this juncture re: CBS. For those of you needing reference>>'The Stratocaster Chronicles', please.

I had just completed 10 years jockeying music and higher education and had hung up that guitar for awhile to pursue the latter. I was teaching general science and planning on professional school. I had registered at the University of Vermont to study 'Quantitative Analysis' that summer.

The guitar had taken a beating and musicians at that time were not generally disposed to displaying unfashionable looking instruments on stage. We were moving into that genre, but not completely. Our concept of stage presence then was quite different. "Vintage" was a thing not yet coined and we know so much more these days about the details of these guitars than we ever did back then.

I sent it to Fullerton, California to be refinished. Fender did not have the kind of network as today. They had what were referred to as "Authorized Fender Service Centers," and they were not in general, guitar dealerships.
So I plodded my way out to some designated dinky electronics repair shop in Brooklyn NY which was the closest, even though I lived in another borough, distant.

In addition to a refinish, I had the center pickup replaced because I thought it was 'broken''. Actually, it was only the cover. I had a bad volume pot replaced and had a trilam pickguard replace the original.

Unbeknownst to me, Fender had changed their concept of the three-color sunburst. What was ultimately returned to me was not the characteristic soft fade like water color, but the more definitive expression of the three. The pickup had the flat across pole pieces. The pot was OK and the neck was the same. I did a double take on the finish, but there was little I could do.

Now for the rest of the story. Fast forward some thirty odd years and I am interested in having this guitar appraised. I take it to "Mandolin Brothers'' on Staten Island.( For those of you who do know of them, do some research. It's where people like Paul McCartney trust their gear.)

After totally disassembling the guitar, the diagnosis was:........a '58 neck, on a '64 body. The company of 1969 replaced the body, they did not refinish it. They kept my '58 body, and returned a mongrel.

Greatly disappointed and disillusioned, I kept the guitar for awhile, and then traded it for newer gear.

And now you know the rest of the story.

Game, set, match.

The post script on this, is that I obtained a second opinion. (Professionally speaking!!) Stated I wanted the guitar appraised for sale. That it was a '58 which I had personally owned over 30 years and had known it's former owner and played the guitar since it was new. That the guitar had been sent to CA to be refinished in 1969. Before and after that, never out of my sight.

They opened the guitar up, looked inside and said, "this is not a '58 Stratocaster body" It's DATED '64. Neck ,"yes", dated 11/58. (That I already knew.)"

The serial # on the back plate was in the 29000 which places it in that time frame. That came back on the guitar. I had already dated the serial number using other resources.

Crazy, isn't it???

Doc, that story just makes a guy go * GULP * ...

I meant to post a new thread here in the Strat forum, but I accidentally put it in the Custom Shop forum. Here's a link to it. It's relevant to strats of yesteryear because Rory Gallagher reviews 5 old-to-new strats back in 1991. Very interesting read.

He likes a 1958 strat the best out of models from 1962, 1971, 1973, and 1991.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to read it when I have more time.
Now I'm wondering if that serial number wasn't an 027000 and not an 029000.

This is an excellent link for review by everyone, particularly Dewie, and Grannie. Grannie will note how a guitar is physically described for appraisal. There are also other details not mentioned such as 'pot' #'s and 'pup' #'s which are part of it. Dewie will get some insight into the evolution of the guitar.

Orville: on the train into Manhattan this morning I was reading that article of yours which I printed out for that purpose. All of a sudden the numbers
'027932' popped into my consciousness. I use that description deliberatedly because the brain records all of our experiences in molecular fashion. It is simply our recall mechanisms which may be less sophisticated. I would be fairly confident in stating that those numbers ARE the serial numbers of my '58 Stratocaster.

The mind works in mysterious ways! I check James Werner list of Fender serial numbers and it's not on there, so it was never "registered" with him. That's a 1958-ish number, for sure.

RE: that Rory article. I like what he said about the 1973 strat:

'It seems more responsive than the '71, it's a good ringing guitar. It's quite an impressive tone too and you wouldn't always get a neck as well cut as this one. The three bolt doesn't worry me overly, but you do get some dogs that move around. I'm still not crazy about the larger headstock, but I can live with the Normandy beach bullet! I prefer this to the '71, but on instinct I'd probably buy the '62 - I do prefer rosewood necks and it feels a bit like my own '61 - but this '73 is surprisingly responsive. I like the bigger frets on these - it's a very Hendrix sound. I keep going back to him but he made a point that he didn't want vintage guitars and was quite happy with the current model.'

Well...maybe it's #029732 and I'm dyslexic. Who knows. Thanks for taking the time.

Have you ever seen AlainLaFrance's pic of his CS '58. That's my guitar to the nines, and check out the tint on the neck in the light of the prior discussion. You can likely bring up his website through the earlier threads.

Doc.

I figured something out. You think that the number in my signature (at the bottom of my posts) is a serial number of a Strat.

Sorry, to have unintentionally mislead y'all, but that number is my Fender Lounge Forum Member number. I know that there's officially no such thing, but from the member list I determined that I was the 26797-th person to sign up here.

I don't have a Strat with a serial number in that range

Sure wish I did. I just have to live with numbers such as 10xx and L4xxxx as my oldest strats.

I've seen some of Alain's strats, but not visited his site to view them all. Perhaps I will investigate this weekend. Looking forward to that!

Sorry, again, guys. I didn't mean to mislead (and changed my signature).
Anyway, there's a twist. I just re-checked the Memberlist (a button up above) and see that 14 people before me must have had their Username/account/profile "retired" ... so I show up with a slightly lower number now. Do I change my "member" number to this lower number or keep the number I've been using from when I originally signed up? Hmmm, decisions, decisions. I guess this lower number is my number among currently active members ...
