Need help I don't know much about guitars, looking for my grandson a graduation present. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry for the late answer - your first post seems to have been delayed quite a bit before publishing...

Anyways: A Custom Shop Strat is a great graduation present. But (there's always a but...), some (like me) just don't like the artificial relic'd guitars. So, if it's still possible time-wise, spy a bit on your grandsons's likes and dislikes.

A natural & worthy option to the Journeyman Relic you linked to could be the regular (new looking) Clapton CS Signature. Bought used, those are roughly in the same price class.

Count me in the relic-indifferent category as well.

I’d say no matter what you get it will be very appreciated.

WOW! Please adopt me.

Following on from the comments above. A very nice guitar at around the right price, it could be considered a little top end for second hand but it is there or there about.

I would say it is something of a connoisseurs choice. Are you sure he will appreciate it for what it is? The other thing is; what would he use it for? In many respects it is far too precious to take out and gig with.

It's great idea for a gift like that, but I do agree relic'd instruments is stretch if you're not sure. This is a personal decision. I'd rather go with a new one, and let the player relic it naturally by playing it.

If you want to do this, I would take a look at either a new professional series, or a any one of the 1,000s of second hand standards that you can find in excellent condition that are sitting on eBay right now. save your self some moulah in the process.

If your Grandson is graduating COLLEGE; he may deserve, and be mature enough to own a $3,000.00 Custom Shop guitar.
If your Grandson is graduating HIGH SCHOOL; I'd say, don't waste your money.

And before anyone slams me for saying that...I WAS a High School graduate, and I went to school with a bunch of other High School graduates---and I nor anyone else I've ever known were worthy of such an item, because the respect just isn't there at that age.

Since this "New" guitar already looks used, save a few thousand dollars and get a used Fender '56 or '57 AVRI

Since those have the thin nitro, it'll have bruises and scars on it in no time.

All the wear and tear will be the one's he puts on the guitar to create memories with.

Look on Reverb and you'll find a lot of AVRI's for less than 1/2 the cost of that Journeyman.

I agree entirely. Or even a MiM 60's Classic Lacquer. It would save more, be a great gigging guitar and a guitar to grow old together, demonstrating all the knocks and scars of an eventful life at the hands of the owner not some fake image of what a used guitar should be.

To return to my point made above, if your grandson is a Strat geek, and has expressed the view that his life wouldn't be complete without a classic Custom Shop reissue to add to his extensive collection, then it would be a guitar well bought. If he just fancies playing the guitar it would be a complete waste of money. It would be the equivalent of buying a Ferrari for someone to do their paper round with.

Just for the record, it was John Sims who made the paper route comment and not me.

Absolutely agree with this.
I had a beautiful Antigua Strat my Junior year in HS.

I've been kicking myself for 35 years for getting rid of it after only a couple of years.
