Hi guys, currently I have decided to buy a new fender guitar but having difficulties to choose one. I have 2 options, which are Fender Baja Telecaster and Fender 50's classic player Stratocaster. Now this is my first fender guitar but I have done a lot of research and chose between these two (I also thought about buying Highway 1 Texas (Tele) and American Strat, but I figured I would go with something unique) and I love both guitars. I understand that telecaster and stratocaster are two different kind of guitars, but for blues, rock and jazz, I don't think it matters whether to get tele or strat. Another factor that I can't decide to get is that the prices are identically the same (Musician's friend = $799.99), and finally they are both great guitar! I did hear the tone of both guitars from youtube and they are both awesome. Unfortunately I cannot go to a guitar store to try them since they are both custom and I have to order them from the store, so I do not know how their necks are (for I've read from articles about both guitar, they are exellent) and their cosmetic. Here are some of the factors that I'm thinking of before buying -

1. No matter which guitar I get, the sounds and pickup I prefer one that is distinct from other guitars such as American standard. I love the twangy bright sound so that I can play on Blues, rock and Jazz (although I think you need quite opposite from bright sound for Jazz) and a guitar that I don't have to upgrade to.

2. A decent quality guitar - I want to get a guitar that can last at least for 5 years. From when I first started playing guitar, I always bought low quality guitars and they last me about 2 years max. I'm sick and tired of trading back and losing money, so I have decided to get a solid guitar that I would like to keep for awhile (and that's why I have decided on these fine guitars to buy).

3. Staying in tune - If you are blues or rock players, you know that sometimes you gotta use your tremelo or bend the strings to have distinct sound. Some of the guitars I played had many difficulties staying in tune, and goes out everytime I bend or use tremelo.

4. Neck - from what I heard either you love or hate the V neck. Problem is, I never grabbed on a V neck before, so I do not know what to expect. I have small hands so I know most of you will suggest getting C-shape neck (which I tried playing from my friend's strat) but I want to give it a shot. Also bending strings and solos are my preference to play on guitar, so I would prefer to get a medium-jumbo or jumbo size neck.

Well, that's about it that I could think of right now. Now this doesn't mean I'm only sticking into Baja or Classic 50's player, I would love to look at other products before buying. The cosmetic and the colour doesn't really matter but I like 2 - tone sunburst, and Maple neck instead of Rosewood (I had bad experiences with rosewood). Very important factor that I must list is sound of the guitar. I don't care if the guitar is banged up or have tons of scratchs and dents, I'm those weirdos who strongly believe that the sound of guitar is most important part. So look doesn't really matter to me. If the guitar sounds nice and smooth, that's all it matter. The sound that I'm looking for is something that is similar to Clapton, Buddy Guy, Muddy Water(like I said, something bright and twangy) and something round (Stevie Ray Vaughan), but I really want to have that smooth jazzy sound. So please do suggest and do not hesitate to give me another option. And if you do choose between these guitars, please tell me why you chosen them, so I can take them into consideration before buying them. Thank you!

Hello my friend,

First of all i'd like to welcome you here and tell you that since you chose your next guitar to be a Fender ,you are in a very good way !!! About your question, there are not many things that i can say. It is something that is totally on you. I would go for the strat because i many times use the middle pickup which you can find only in some Tele models (Nashville, Blackout, B-Bender etc.), because of the body shape that to me is for sure more comfortable and better looking, and because of the fact that from all the great guitarists i like, most of them use Strats. That's why i recently bought an American Std Strat and i think that i really couldn't get sth better.
On the other hand I am sure that my next guitar, as long as i still have the strat will be a tele. Great guitars, other sounds, the beginning of Fender Electrics.
I know that i'm not helping a lot but all i want to say is not to thing too much about it. You are between two very good instruments and you can't go wrong. If you have the extra money go for the American Series whichever you choose. Tele or Strat doesn't matter. You're gonna be so nicely surprised with the tone of your new Fender, that you are never going to think about the other that you didn't choose. Thanks for reading.Waiting for photos. Greetings from Greece.

Go with what feels the best in all settings...
I could tell you a million reasons why I love my sneakers that u WILL agree with...
Yet when u try them on ur foot might literally experience pain from them. lol
I am a strat player, probably always will be...
I love the versitility and the COMFORT...
The strat was pretty much born from the telecaster in a way.
If u finger pick alot, the tele doesn't have that middle pickup in the way.

I literally went shopping around for telecasters but ended up buying another strat. LOL
But that's just me...

on the neck issue the only way your going to know is to play the guitar your going to buy. I recently bought a 57hotrod and didnt realize it had a v neck, i just played it and it felt right.
That V neck seems exactly the right shape for bends and especialy vibrato. the pitch of the V feels exactly where you'd want it to be to maintain control.
On the sound issue your never going to get a more versatile guitar than the strat, i'd look at one with the s1 switching option. Then again i know several people with baja tele's who play everything from discharge to dire straits and their only complaints about the guitar is that it has too many switching options.

All the best choosing.

i'd choose the player 50's. The strat and tele are both great for blues, rock, etc. But the strat has the middle pickup, which gives it a good jazzy tone; not too twangy, not too bassy. The strat also has a different sound; i'd call it a stingy blues sound, but not too sure. I like both telecasters and strats for their sound, but i'd probably go with the strat anyday. But it's your option, not mine. ( i wish i could cough up 800!) They're both good instruments, so try similar items at your local shop, and 'the one' will come to you!

Good luck with your Fenders (hope i didn't post too late):)

I think that baja is better for blues and rock but 50's player is better for Mighty Jazz... :D :D
