Hey guys, I recently purchased a 59 Closet Classic Custom Shop Strat. Lovely guitar and sounds killer, but after buying I noticed some hard dry green gunk in the grain lines. After using a deep cleaner (Dunlop 01) and toothbrush it's still barely coming off. Anyone see this before? Also, are these grain lines normal in a Madagascar RW or look like wood rot or something more concerning? I'm fine if it's cosmetic but just want to ensure something bad isn't going on that will effect it long term. The previous owner "didn't notice" the stuff as he didn't play it much. Guitar is 7 years old. Thanks! 8)

My first guess is, it's residue from some polishing compound - if well dried, those are quite hard to get off.
I'd try a soft (tooth)brush, possibly some zippo fluid if necessary - followed by oil re-treatment, of course.

Rots, molds & such would IMHO need really damp/swamp conditions to be that successfully spread, plus in my 'hood they're not that bright colored.

You might get a more experting opinions if you post the pics on the forum, like this:

It may just be the timber. There had to be something in those fissures when it was a tree.

Agreed! Somebody used the wrong fretboard conditioner (maybe a Carnauba wax, or other wax that never should have been put on open grain woods). I can see in the photos that it is acting as a "filler" (as in wood filler, or car body putty), and not a 'mold' or gunk from dirty fingers. That's just my opinion for what it's worth.

I believe that is Turtle Wax.
I’ve seen it done before ... unfortunately.
It will take long hard work and continued elbow grease with hard bristled tooth brush and some fine but gentle hand work with a sharp dental pick.

There’s just no accounting for how dumb some people can be.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

As a teen back in the '70s I had heard that pure carnauba wax was good for fretboards.

And I waxed my parents' cars with Classic car wax which said on the label that it was pure carnauba.

But I didn't realize that it was a wax/polish. The only wax in it was pure carnauba, but it was mixed with a fine white polishing compound.

I suspect that my long gone Les Paul Deluxe still has that white crap in the pores of the fretboard.

Yep...Dunlop 65 Body Gloss is a Carnauba wax, and works absolutely fantastically on lacquer and satin finishes...but I'd NEVER use it on porous open wood grains such as Rosewood. In fact it says right on the bottle not to.
