After being a very happy bone-stock 2004 Strat owner for quite a while, I hotrodded out the MIM a bit, adding:
- Tex Mex pickups (honestly, though, the git's original MIM ceramics are a good pup)
- New saddles
- Pearloid pickguard
- Black knobs and 5-pos switch (I considered going with black pup covers, but the Tex Mex only comes in white, and decided to leave them alone)
- 06+ trem block
- Pro install & full set up

It's a full-fledged beast.

The MIM Standard Strats are great guitars to modify and learn how to change and tweak things. I've always gone for the sound/tone mods first and then maybe some cosmetic changes afterwards.

It looks good though, congrats and nice work!

Great looking guitar! And I love pearliod. I have a chrome silver body with a black pearloid pickguard, and I love the look.

Crips sake "monkey see monkey do"! Everyone and his grandmother thiinks it's the next big thing to take a Mexican Strat and have to change this or that in it. Welll you know what? The stock pickups sound just fine to me and I'm an individual and my stock pickups are going to be left alone. For crips sake, what all this bologna about having to get a Mexican Strat and have to take out the pickups and all this and all that. The stock pickups sound fine and I'm leaving mine alone. Just use Mike Fuller's Fulltone OCD pedal like Robin Trower does and leave the poor guitar at rest ya know? All this hype of get a Mex Strat and having to do this & that to it to me sounds like a bunch of garbage!

Maybe you missed this in my original post that started this thread:
"the git's original MIM ceramics are a good pup"

What works for one person, doesn't always work for another. We all have different ears, and often find "the sound", that we prefer over another. Also....some people like to "personalize their guitars, so it's not like all the others, and is unique.

A lot of people love the three tone sunburst, and it's a good color. But for me, I see so many of them, I get that feel that "everybody" has one. So when I've bought my guitars, I looked for something different, something more unique than what everyone else has. Maybe it just makes that guitar into something "special" for someone. I know it does for me.

I agree with Dewie69. The black pup covers would definitely finish her off. You should go for it dude. You've come this far why not go one more step. It's easy and inexpensive enough. Buy Fender though. Don't settle for generics . I bought some from Stew-Mac one time and they were awful... warped, no shine, just dull, cheap pieces of plastic. Don't get me wrong... I love Stew-Mac for a lot of good quality replacement parts, but certain things just don't have that Fender quality. The devil's in the details. Great looking guitar man! PEACE

Yeah, I almost did it. The only reason I didn't was that Tex Mex pups come only in white. So I decided to just live with it and see how I liked it before changing out.
Right now I must admit that I probably will go with black pup covers the next time I change strings.

BTW, thanks for the nice words.

One of my guitars (Chrome Silver) has black knobs and black pickups, along with blank knobs. I love the look of the black.

Your right about wanting to have a different look and so many Sunburst Strats out there they all seem the same. Maybe the reason I said leave the stock pickups in is becuase I forget I have a made in Mexico 70s reissue Strat in Natuaral wood and it has the Alnico pickups instead of the ceramics. Even though it's made in Mexico they still had to duplicate that 70 reissue guitar and remain true to a certain point so that's why mine has the Alinicos, but I also love the look of that Natural Wood color. I had a Black Strat back in the 70s and would be sick of that color again. Kind of see what you mean. But don't forget even if it is a (MIM) Strat, since it's a 70s reissue they still have to keep true to the 70s model and leave certain things from the 70s the way they were. (laughs) !
