Is it just me or does the repro of Rory's Strat look hardly anything like the original?

It doesn't look so good to me either. Actually, I think they should have tried to duplicate Rory's guitar circa 1973 or 1975 when it wasn't so black and grungy looking. And when Rory was at his Peak.

Anyway, here's another famous strat in the hands of a famous strat player, Robin Trower.

On the accuracy of the Gallagher guitar reproduction: we've got to remember that was done in the earlier days of the replica quest. By the latest standards of verisimilitude achieved by the Custom Shop it is primitive - but then I guess at that point they were trying to give a general "idea" of the original, rather than a scratch for scratch facsimile. I can remember reviewers gasping with amazement over the achievement of that Tribute guitar at the time (while the rest of us tried to get our heads around the whole notion of stalking a player in this way).

The wrong number of holes on the pickguard really is a bit sloppy, though.

Cheers - C

Here's Hendrix' Black Strat:

Image

He used it quite a bit on his last tours in 1970.
It seemed to be his favorite at the end of his life as it's the one that was in his possession at the time of his death (RIP).

Yes, and I believe the story goes that his girlfriend at the time took possession of it after Hendrix's death. Soon after, she hooked up with none other than Ulrich Roth (whose picture was recently posted in this thread, btw). Supposedly they were together for almost twenty years, up until the time that she commited suicide in 1996 (or so). The legend goes that Ulrich (aka Uli) took possession of the Hendrix black Strat but publicly denies any knowledge of it.

I am not a total hardcore Hendix historian, so please feel free to correct me if needed.

I also. You were lucky. The last time I was at EMP, the guitar had been put away. Grungy looking axe, isn't it!! I hope to get out there again in two weeks.

Fascinating history. My first questions to my GC contact after the "Blackie" repro was.... How about 'Brownie? He was of the same mind.

My guess is that Paul Allen is unlikely to allow Fender to replicate that guitar.

Admittedly more of a Les Paul player, but this guitar has a certain fame to some of us in the hands of... Joe Bonamassa. (Kinda my main man, for a while now. Go, Joe!)
