Better to see the real ones than the replicas!

Thanks. This is a great thread. I look forward to other famous strats.

As for the Bonnie Raitt strat, I agree, the Signature Model should have looked like the one in the picture.

I think KWS's strat would look better if he rubbed a mixture of used motor oil and dirt into the bare wood areas of that guitar :D

Wouldn't that make the guitar loose tone?

No, you want to seal the tone in.

The SRV influence on both him and Mayer is intense.(The reading on JM's guitars on that link recently posted was enlightening from that standpoint).

Clapton's great hero was Freddy King, hence the Les Paul, as well as the Strat tones out of the "Brownie" which was used on his first solo outing "Eric Clapton". His is a very interesting study in the evolution of tone.

While his most famous Strat may be the white one on his "Wired" album, here are three of Jeff Beck's strats.

Image
This one seems to have a '50s maple neck and cropped pickguard. Funny thing is that a couple years ago, Fender Japan made a "Jeff Beck Model" copied after this one, cropped pickguard and all! Here's another

Image
This one seems to be about a 1970 (give or take a year), no bullet truss rod. And another

This one has a bullet truss rod, so it's a '70s.

An aside on this one Dewie. One of my earliest posts embraces a host of discussions we have held here on JM.

It started in August when it was posted that he had acquired one of the Crossroad 'Sun" Strats. On viewing the YouTube performance I noticed that he's playing a 'Sun' Strat with a dark wood finger board. Brad picked up on that and informed me that the CS had taken JM's Crossroads Strat and modded it with his preferred neck and pickups. That was confirmed in JM's own words on his blog. So now JM has a one-off of a limited edition...hence an EC/JM mongrel. There's a future auction where the numbers are going to be astronomical.

I raised the issue because it kind of irks me when, for example, a guitar mag runs an article about an artist, they list the main gear, and the photo displays an instrument other than what was spoken of in print.

Doc

The only thing constant is change.

I just saw an example of this. The other year, Carvin put out a free promotional DVD. Among the artists touting the greatness of Carvin's guitars was Joe Walsh. Joe had gotten a California Carved Top (or whatever they officially call it) and the feature he loved was that the bridge was solid to the body and not perched on skinny little bolts. Well, yesterday, I see that Joe Walsh has become a spokesman for Gibson touting the new 2008 Les Paul Standard, skinny little bolts and all.

To be fair, we did see Joe playing Carvins ... for a while. Now, I suppose, we'll see him playing these new Les Pauls. I wonder how many Gibson gave him?

(If your memory is as good as mine , I'll leave it to you to tell these fine folks what the '50's era Carvin headstocks used to look like.)

Endorsement money is a 'strong persuader'. Remember my point of view:
"this is racket is STILL a business."

Well, I have that free Carvin DVD and there is a part that shows pages from their old catalogs. Their headstocks were all over the place; Gibson type, Tele- and Strat-style.

The thing I found most curious was all of the electric mandolins Carvin offered back in the '50s. Even Fender offered one at the end of the '50s, so it must have been popular for a short time.

Now the only reason I mentioned this was a John Cruz is I thought I read somewhere and now I forget where JM had this guitar custom made with Cruz and that he actually painted it himself. And sometimes trying to find out some of that info is like findind a needle in a haystack
