I'm thinking those pickups are what they called "ST Vintage USA", and that the body came from a "ST-62-58US" model, S5D diecast full size block. In '98 the other colors would have been Black, Vintage White and CAR. Later on, someone who preferred maple fretboards, switched the neck to the '54 version (still guessing...).

Your guess is as good as mine. I noticed the pickups and knobs are a different color than the pickguard. Not sure if that's an indication of a possible replacement or just a result of age?

I've been reading various forums and have found the mismatched neck and body may not be that uncommon (not sure how accurate that is). I did find a 1998 catalog online and think the far one on the right in the link below may be it.

However as you point out, it could be this one on the left in the link below. The body is pretty light, so it could be basswood as opposed to lightweight ash. The lack of grain points to basswood as well. I have no preference as to wood. The body is super resonant. You can really feel it vibrate when you play it.

An absolutely beautiful guitar. In my 'hood, a price tag of 700 would be considered fair and reasonable - without an amp or any other embellishments.
BTW, which amp? :)

Thanks for the compliment! I think she is pretty too. I posted some pics in the Lounge of the amp. It's a Randall Switchmaster Combo. Sounds good, but don't need it and can't find any info on it. Would like to sell it but need to figure out a reasonable price for it.

My line of conclusion is something like:
Your body stamp - the brochure's "one in the right" would (should) have "ST-54" in the body's neck pocket, not "ST-62" as yours.
And as far as I can see, the pickup wire colors match the "USA Vintages" (probably non-RWRP, all wires similar colors) better that the "American 50's" (probably RWRP, since the mid pup wires differ from neck/bridge).

Anyways, the importantest thing is the end result, and yours turned out fine. Way good deal with the amp (the Randall is uglycool...).
BTW, nothing wrong with basswood, even if one believes the tonewood theories. Screw hole edges may grind to dust a bit too fast, but that's an easy fix.

(And BTW2, a bit offtopic; the two ST-54-58 USA's in the left of the brochure have surprisingly different maple plugs in the headstock truss rod hole...)
