So I picked this little beauty up today for a pretty good deal. She plays pretty sweet but could a proper setup. So far this is what I know:
Crafted in Japan 1997-98
Fret board Radius = 7.25"
Staggered Pole pickups
Neck = 5.8
Middle and Bridge = 5.79
5 way switch
Tone control for neck
tone control for middle and bridge

Will probably upgrade the block and tuners. Will open her up later and take pics of the inside. Here are a few for now.

Looks like a 54' CIJ
As long as it ain't broke, the locking vintage tuners look appropriate for the guitar to me.
The solder on the trem-claw looks iffy(cold) and may need re-flowed. I would certainly inspect all the electronics and solder connections.

I was thinking it was some version of 50's as well. Thanks for the additional input, the more info I can get on this the better. I don't think I ever saw so much solder in one place other than on the spool.

I don't want to replace anything that would hurt the "value" and the tuners seem fine for now. There are stiff so I will shoot some lubricant in them before I replace them. The more info I can get on this the better.

This is the series called classic/collectible, 50's,60's & 70's models originally made in Japan (1992-1999) then Fender moved production to Mexico under the classic model name. Originally they had blue and crimson photo flame finishes options from 92-94, then vintage replica finishes from 95-99. 2 tone burst, oly-white, shell pink, sonic blue, CAR and black were the other finishes.

Here are some more pics. Looks like I will definitely be replacing the pots and switch and probably change the pickguard to a 3 ply. The tone pots show some corrosion and I noticed the volume pot is 500k. I thought all pots in strats are 500k? Any suggestions or upgrade suggestions would be appreciated. I've heard good things about the Emerson Pro pots but have not used them.

A 54 neck on a 62 body.
The volume pot was obviously changed recently, dated 2015. The tone pots look possibly original, cant see the dates.
As far as upgrades, depends on your tastes.
If it were mine I would find a 62' pickguard(access at the heel for the truss rod) and CS pickups to taste, a set of 57/62 seems appropriate and new cloth wired 250k audio pots and new switch. I would install an axial tone cap and probably install a treble bleed too although the treble bleed wasn't around during the era.

I think the tone pots are original. There is a substantial amount of oxidation on them which makes them impossible to read.

Good point on the pickguard. I was wondering how the heck you would adjust the neck in it's current setup.

I was looking at these two options for upgraded electronics. The Emerson seems a little pricey. If I go that route I will see if I can get it cheaper unassembled. I don't like the idea of paying a markup for soldering when I can do it myself.

Based on my pics above the stamps, it looks the like neck is styled after the 54 and the body after the 62. Is it safe to assume the pickups would be styled after the 54 as well? I like the way they sound and may go a similar route with my other strat.

Also, can anyone give me an idea of what this is worth? I know it's a moot point now but just wondering if I overpaid or got a good deal.

Its a more desirable years of production CIJ and a solid guitar as long as it plays well, but its value max is probably about $500. If it were 10-20 yrs older and a MIJ it would easily be worth as much as $1500.

Either upgrade kit, pots/switch/wiring harness/caps will be a nice upgrade, imo. I haven't tried the Emerson products but it has a nicer tone cap and includes a treble bleed cap & resistor which is why the price is higher, not to mention the branded aspect of all components.

Even with the cutout 62' truss access pickguard, the neck screws will need to be loosened slightly to give full access to the truss screw. But that's the way they came in 62' and would look best w/ that body. Also it will have the closest mounting screw positioning, you may have to fill and drill if you can't find one that matches the CIJ body exactly.

I would assume the pickups are at best, US American standard.
But more likely they are CIJ standards of the era, possibly US imports.
If you like the way they sound, keep them.
You could always think about a loaded pickguard as an option also, maybe a CS Fat 50/60's.

As long as I can sell the amp for a few bucks, I think he and I got a fair deal (considering the condition).

I do like the way the pickups sound so I plan on keeping them for now. I am not a pickup expert but I think you are correct about them being the run of the mill imports.

If it was me, I'd leave the block too. It has a "full block". The ones I hate are those partial ones that they used to (maybe still do?) put on the MIM Strarts circa early 2000s.

Yep, I got a little excited when I brought it home. Now that I have calmed down a bit I think upgrading the pots, switch, jack and caps makes the most sense and will be the best bang for my buck.

I'm thinking those pickups are what they called "ST Vintage USA", and that the body came from a "ST-62-58US" model, S5D diecast full size block. In '98 the other colors would have been Black, Vintage White and CAR. Later on, someone who preferred maple fretboards, switched the neck to the '54 version (still guessing...).

An absolutely beautiful guitar. In my 'hood, a price tag of 700 would be considered fair and reasonable - without an amp or any other embellishments.
BTW, which amp? :)
