Okay, I know all about Jimi, and so do you (right? ), but how did he get that sound on a marshall stack? I like marshalls but I can't get that clean sorta' distorted sound through it, but I can get it! through tube amps.
Help me out ere

Unless you have Jimi's fingers you won't get his tone. You can only aim to get close! Have you tried cranking the Marshall? He used 100 watt tube amps so you're gonna have to get it nice and loud before you get that natural crunch.

Well if your listening to a hendrix album chances are you might be listening to a fender bassman and not a marshall stack.

Yeah. Also during the recording of Electric Ladyland Jimi was using a Fender Bassman and a Super Showman.

I also believe that live he ran the amp back into itself somehow. Like he took one output, and ran it right back into the second input of the amp, to somehow "double amplify" the signal. I think this was possible before the Master Volume Marshall's? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I would hate to mislead the OP.

You probably mean the connection of the Plexi's two channels. This lets you use and mix both channels at the same time.

It's called channel blending; I do that on my '59 Bassman (blend the "Bright" and "Normal" channels). ;)

I'll tell you what I think. He loaded a lot of his amps with JBL speakers. The JBL's are very articulate and clear. Naturally, distortion and overdrive are Hendrix trademarks, butI think he intended to start with the cleanest sound in order to have the most control over the final output signal after he put the guitar thry his array of pedals. Celestions and Jensens can't achieve the clarity of a JBL.

Eric Johnson uses JBL's too. I have a JBL K-120 in my '66 Deluxe Reverb and it makes all the difference in tone. I can use effects and get any amount of overdrive, but someone using a garden variety speaker will never touch the clean sounds.

Fender offered several amps with special design JBL speakers. I have played thru Twins and Super Reverbs with Fender special design (orange) JBL's.

Here is a link that shows Jimi's Marshall rig. Note that it mentions the JBL's toward the bottom of the page:

A lot of people actually forget he used Sunn amps too. He was endorsed by them for a few years. But if you really wanna hear his Bassman listen to "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" I know for sure he used that amp on that song.

experienced was a marshall 1959 or jtm45
axis was a p90 equipped V through a bassman
ladyland was various bassman's, plexi's, sunn, orange and twin reverbs.

You wont get a modern marshall gain channel to sound like a plexi, their 2 very different beasts. You do better to crank the clean channel. Or a recording trick i used to get the tone was to plug into a marshall bluesbreaker pedal and plug the pedal directly into the effects return on the amp. It gets you close to the early plexi sound at reasonable volume.
Speakers and cab structure have a hell of a lot to do with his tone too. People forget that they were very early days for 4x12 cabs. I found they weren,t as well made as modern cabs and vibrate in funny ways.
