My assumption is it will be MIA, perhaps even Custom Shop. There seemed to be quite a lot of thinline examples on the Custom Shop stand at NAMM judging by the videos on YouTube.

Even based on this, if they sell like hot cakes I have every confidence there will be MiM examples in due course ....supply and demand etc.

I like my Strats to be light and, if it is good enough for Eric Johnson, it should be damn good. But is it really a Strat ? Part of EJs reasoning for the thinline was he liked the sound that an acoustic produces ...well is that really a Strat then?

LOL

I just got this through:- (just so you want it more)

Fender Eric Johnson Thinline Stratocaster - Maple Neck - 2-Colour Sunburst

£2019.00

Fender have worked with guitar legend Eric Johnson to create this special edition signature Thinline Stratocaster. Combining the playable nature of the Stratocaster with the unique resonances found in semi-hollow designed guitars, Fender have hit the nail on the head with this new version. The pickups are specially voiced Eric Johnson single-coils which are fitted with countersunk screws for added interaction with the body, and is available in two beautiful finishes. This signature is certainly one to be remembered!

Bringing to life the vision of one of the most respected guitarists in the world, the Eric Johnson Signature Stratocaster Thinline is the perfect marriage between a semi-hollow body and a traditional Stratocaster.

Johnson is famous in guitar circles for questing for his ideal tone—liquid and articulate, it perfectly complements the playing style that earned his place in the modern guitar pantheon. In 2015 he approached Fender to co-design a lightweight, resonant instrument that combines the tones of his favorite semi-hollowbody guitars and his Stratocaster. Two years later, they hit the formula for tonal nirvana with the Eric Johnson Signature Stratocaster Thinline.

The custom-chambered body has been finished with nitrocellulose lacquer, allowing the wood to “breathe” with character. The three single-coil Stratocaster pickups were specially voiced to meet Johnson’s specifications, and are mounted to the semi-hollow, two-piece alder body with countersunk screws for even more vibration transfer. The comfortable “’57 Soft V”-shaped quartersawn maple neck bears a 12”-radius maple fingerboard and 21 medium-jumbo frets for enhanced playability.

Other custom features include a vintage-style tremolo with silver-painted block, ’57-style string recesses, thin headstock with vintage-style staggered tuning machines, ’57-style parchment pickguard and “ashtray” bridge cover. An R&D tour de force, the Eric Johnson Stratocaster Thinline is the first semi-hollow Strat that combines custom chambers with traditional Stratocaster arm and body contours.

Warmoth's chambered body has had the arm cut for long. And except for the belly cut, the EJ body looks a lot like the thinlines by Mr. (late, great) John English. So, R&D or mix & match..?
Anyways, someones in the M&C (Marketing and Confusion) Dpt thinks us ol' folks can't remember & ain't interweb savvy...

"When you're turning up the volume you want the wood to kind of turn in on itself."

Don't get me wrong ... the guy is a phenomenal player but he needs to either get off the drugs or else stop trying to look and talk like he's on drugs.

He's always saying some stupid 5h!t like that.

That said .... looks like an interesting guitar.

+1000!

Just more blasphemous bullshit from a company whose R&D team wouldn't make it at Apple, Tesla, or Samsung.

They should call it the Excreta-Caster.

Yeah, semi-hollow just doesn't work with the Strat body shape - too thin, too contoured, too shaped... not enough physical volume.

The Tele Thinline gets away with it because of it's squared off shape and larger volume, but the Strat just looks wrong.

The more I look at it the more the F hole looks wrong. Is there some acoustic magic inherent in an F hole that means it needs to be F shaped? I appreciate it needs to be F shaped to be an F hole, but you get my drift.

I love light Strats but think I would be more inclined to buy a chambered Strat without a hole that still looks like a Strat.

I found the following:-

"If you look at the F-holes on a "classical" stringed instrument (violin family instead of guitar family), you'll find they are centered on either side of the bridge. The construction of the instrument with the floating bridge is such that the bridge is the major conductor of vibration to the top table. The F-holes allow the top table to vibrate the most at the bridge, which is the most efficient design in terms of getting the entire body of the instrument to resonate."

"A guitar (non archtop) is similar in theory, but results in a different design. The guitar is built so that the part of the top just under the bridge is the freest to vibrate. The top is braced everywhere else to keep it from tearing itself apart under tension, but the bridge is braced the least possible amount, so when the string vibrates, the vibrations are conducted through the most vibrant part of the top, allowing the instrument to resonate more. F-holes on a flat body would defeat a lot of the bracing so the sound hole was instead placed further away from the bridge in between various bracings. It has the added effect of increasing projection, as the hole really does act like a port in a speaker cabinet. The F-holes of a violin do not project as much, which would be counterproductive anyway; all the sound would project upwards. They are merely an aid to flexibility of an otherwise very rigid top."

"the notches represent the halfway point of the f hole to provide a center for the bridge placement, over where there is no bracing. But there is the bass bar nearby and the soundpost(violin inst's) on the other side for stability and vibration transmission. It all works together, the strings vibrate over the bridge, which sends it down into the center of the top table, where the sound holes help it move, sending the vibrations to the bass bar and the sound post, which connects to the back table, which helps project the sound though the whole instrument"

So to answer my on question - Seemingly yes on a violin but no on a guitar. This being the case the whole F shaped hole on a guitar just seems pretentious rather than having any real physical advantages. I can see that it gives the largest hole to a narrow internal cavity but then a rounded ended slot would do the same, or a slot which echoed the shape of the body or guard so it at least looked like it was meant to be there. This all feels a bit like putting a hood ornament on a Lamborghini.
