I have an opportunity to buy a 2000 SRV Strat. Thing is that while it has the Steve signature on the headstock, SRV looking neck and gold hardware, the pickguard it tortoiseshell, no SRV script letters and the pickups are black. Not White.

Looks striking. It have never seen this version. Any insight as to how long this would have been produced, it it is equal I. Quality to the traditional looking SRV, wa it made for a different market? I like it but not interested if it’s anything less than the other SRV I own.

Any help appreciated!!!

Thanks you.

First of all, do the legit/original testing.
SRV signatures are so often fakes that anything out of the ordinary should ring a bell.
One note here: they can be all-Fender, but not actually signature models. And in the deep end, they have no connection to FMIC at all.

If you need usable help from the forum, pics and as much background info as you can provide are a must.

I don't think Fender ever made any SRV's with tortoise guards and black pickup covers.

But there are a lot of people who buy those guitars for the big necks and then replace the pickguard because they're a little self-conscious about looking like they're a "Stevie Wannabe".

Others replace it just so it won't get scratched up.

Most people keep the stock guard and either put it back on if they sell the guitar, or at least include it with the guitar when they sell.

But 18 years is a long time. Maybe the guy's house burned down while he was playing that guitar at a gig. Or he got divorced and it's in a box in the house his ex-wife now owns.

To some degree it lowers the chance of it being a counterfeit SRV. There's like a dozen Chinese SRV guards on eBay right now -- if someone is trying to pass off a partsocaster as the real deal they'd probably have used one of those.
