ZZDoc, and Dan, can’t wait to hear what y’all think about these necks.

I know I really like mine, very chunky, and very soft V, it’s hardly noticeable.

A bit of history. In 2007 Fender marketed this.

https://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guit ... ster-26408

They took the '57 V-neck and flattened the spine to make it feel 'played in.' It was not as tapered as the Clapton but chunkier than the neck on Gilmour's Red '57VRI, a neck type which was to become known as the '57V.

I ordered one in 2010 in two color sunburst and swapped it out for the 60th Anniversary '54 in 2014. Last night, after our conversations, I was again wondering what makes one do things? A special engraved neckplate "One of '54" on the first 54 guitars built. I swore in these pages back then that I would not buy one unless such a guitar found me.

Well it did. The only one in South Florida turned up in the Sam Ash store near me. :?

More later.

Doc

Interesting story Doc .. I want to hear more .. Now .. hehe

And even more so for me .. I bought a Vintage Hot Rod '57 2TSB body & hardware to mate to a Clapton Neck ..

.. which evolved into my Hot Rod Brownie build ..

Very nice (Ash) construction & (lacquer) finishing .. vintage contours .. and a cool neck plate .. : )

I remember that guitar project you did with Roy's help on the circuitry. Turned out well. The '54 I purchased is still with the herd.

In the other matter of the neck.....first I would like to say that I fear that the headbangers have put the kibosh on guitar buying. I have no patience for trying to figure out what's on the wall 18 feet over my head, or behind the counter. I'm accustomed to reading labels, specs, and putting my hands on the guitars. No more where the stores near me are concerned.

I visited my local Sam Ash and Guitar Center stores this afternoon. SA had an 'original 50's', GC did not. When I inquired of the SA salesperson whether they had the 'Original 50's' Stratocaster he responded that they didn't have an 'original' guitars, only reissues. WTF?? In fact the SA guy thought the guitar he took off the wall was an Original 60's until he looked closely at the label. It was a 50's. I put my hands on the neck. I have to say that its likely close to or almost the same as the neck on my VG, and the necks I remember on the Guy or Vaughn. Short in my memory, it may be close to the neck on those as well as that which was on my old '58 of blessed memory and the Custom Shop guitar they built for me 10+ years ago. Suffice it to say its likely in the 'family' of the generic soft-V neck. Definitely no definitive spine or taper, but a comfortable neck to say the least. Regrettably there were no other guitars I could determine might have had v-necks I could compare them with.

I hope this has been of some help in the discussion. In closing, if the 'big box' stores are complaining that they are in trouble, my observation is that they can't enhance the shopping experience by restricting access to product the way these two stores are.

Doc

If you want to 'browze around too much' to find a dealer who might have one in stock to audition, it's a way to kill a Saturday. Buyers order stock which they feel will move. Do you recall that I waited 10 months for my '57HR because the production line was churning out the newly released guitar model of that moment and VRI's were on the end of the list for that year.

On another note....where did you see Roy's picture?

Doc

I don't expect to see any REAL original 1950's Strats till I get back to Nashville. Although I live in Irving TX now and Dallas is a suburb ..

10 Months is a long time to wait on a VR .. bright side is getting what you wanted

I have a snapshot (digital) of Roy working on my guitar ..

Can I PM it to you through the forum? lemmeno

........that'd be Gruhn Guitars for sure...There you'll certainly have the opportunity to compare necks...'54-58.

You're in Dallas. Our now very grown up and professional 'texasguitarslinger' Rebecca Laird lives in and does gigs in and around Houston. She had a Facebook page as well.

Do send that photo on. I'd be happy to see it.

Doc

Dallas is a suburb of Nashville.

You Texans sure have a funny idea of an acceptable commute from the suburbs to work

LOL, ya... I'm familiar with the distances, my folks live in Cedar Park and brother in Georgetown, we drive out to see them once or twice a year. Came home through Ft Worth last year, fun trip.

It was just the way you worded it left the gate open for me to razz you about the size of your Republic ;)

CB91710 is alright Doc .. he gave me good advice on taming the shrill from a Direct Through mod on another post

Which I followed tonight .. testing a variety of caps .. all I needed was a .001uf cap to stop the bleeding ..

Certainly no offense taken .. he's a good man .. Thanks for all CB!

I'll report on the cap test tomorrow .. with pics .. if I still like it in the morning
