Hello....I am new here today. I own 3 MIA Fender electrics, an Offset Telecaster, a Stratocaster American standard, and an American Telecaster Special. Just this week I decided to switch out the original tuners on the 2016 Offset Tele.....to Fender issue locking tuners which I like ( the round thumb wheel ). This guitar came from the factory with 4 short post tuners ( strings 1-4 ) and 2 long post tuners....the A and low E, (strings 5-6). The Fender replacements had them 3 and 3....not 4 and 2....leaving me to wonder...which is right ?. Of course the D string not being a short post now seems a high break angle behind the nut (which bothers me). And to further confuse (me)...the Telecaster Special is all short post , no staggered tuners. In trying to reason this all out, I seem to think this 4-2 staggered is the best configuration...all three MIA's have one string tree. Anyone here shed some light..? Am I missing something obvious.... The 2012 Strat also has 4-2 original non-locking tuners which I hope to switch out soon too. Do people buy an extra set as a parts set to get that needed 4th short post to get around this, or.....

Fender has used 4+2, 3+3 and 2+2+2 staggered tuners - none of those is 'right' or 'wrong'. The functional idea of this is to eliminate string trees - and there, Fender has the options none, one or two...

Usually the staggered-in-many-versions/all-tall variables don't cause any real problems.

The American Deluxe locking tuners (= the non-F-stamped ones) are sold as singles; part numbers 0036447000 (short) and 0036448000 (long).

Its the string break dilemma, by changing from a winding tuner to a locking tuner you decrease the break angle;
less than one wrap vs. 2 or 3 wraps.

Like jmattis said there is no right/wrong just what works in conjunction w/ the string tree layout of your headstock.

IMO, w/ locking tuners the less than one full wrap means all short posts should work in all 6 positions w/ one string tree on the B/E or possibly no trees.

Thank you Gentleman.
The 6 shorts with the locking seems right for me, after the go round. I think that one string tree and 6 short post tuners is the right configuration. Break angIe looks good too. This whole staggered business seems a bad idea. appreciate your time. !
