So Fender support has responded, and says this is infact a regular Plus and the Pearloid Pickguard came stock

I think you could bet the holes are stripped out and those rusty old screws are oversized.

I think you are right ESS about the srews being over-sized. When you get the proper screws, don't foget the toothpick trick. Drop the tip of a toothpick into the hole and cut the excess away. When you screw in the proper screws, they should hold nice and tight.

An option to the good ole toothpick trick: mix a minuscule drop of rapid drying epoxy; apply inside the hole with a toothpick so you sort of 'laminate' the inside edges. Wait until dry (about five minutes); repeat if the hole is still too loose.
