Hey guys,

wish you all a happy new year.
Since I´m a noob, let´s start with some info about me.
I´m a German thirty-something.
Been playing for 26 years now, recording and gigging on an indie band level back in the day.
Quit playing 8 years ago (kids, house, you know the deal), sold pretty much all my gear back then (doh !).
Just started playing again, so I´m on the hunt to complete my rig to the state it was before I went on my hiatus.

I had a beautiful 2006 American Series Strat in 3TSB, and wanted one that like that again cause I liked the modern style bridge saddles, staggered tuners and that funky diamond badge on the headstock :D.

So I just bought a used Strat that looked legit at first glance, but it kinda throws me off a bit.
It was advertised as a 2004 60th anniversary (yeah sure  ), but the serial number showed it was indeed a 2006 American Series. Contacted the seller and he was a very friendly, elderly guy that seemed completely trustworthy, so I didn't mind the mistake in his description. Can´t expect every guitarist to be all geeky about dates and specs, right ?

Taking a closer look, I noticed the odd neck-plate. Stamped with a slanted Fender logo, no Corona, California underneath, but with the micro-tilt. Kinda like the one they used before 1998.

So I started investigating a bit and found that the color, which seems like midnight wine to me, wasn't offered on American Series Stratocasters in 2006. There are some very dark looking candy cola ones out there that have a late Z6..... serial number like mine, though, so that might be no issue.

I haven't had the chance to take off the pickguard and check the UPC codes in the cavities.
Guess that might clear things up a bit.
Also contacted Fender about a spec sheet, but haven't received anything yet.

I will be posting some pics later. I have to set up some pic hosting account first...

Any thoughts on this already ?

Thanks guys !

Cheers, Moe

You may have a right to be concerned.
However you are going the right way to get to the bottom of it.
The neck cavity should have a date stamp close to the year of production.
Chrome red was offered that year.
If fender get back with a serial check matching the color then maybe an unusual neckplate only.
Anything more and it could be parts.
You should be able to use their online serial check as well it is fairly comprehensive.
Are the pickups staggered? They should be.
Good luck :D

Pay for a 2004 Anniversary Strat and receive a 2006 , I will return back the guitar to the seller or ask some money back and keep the guitar

Well, both 2004 and 2006 had Anniversary models.
2004, Stratocaster's 50th birthday, 2006 Fender's 60th (Fender Electric Instrument Company, "Diamond").

On this particular guitar, Fender will probably shed some light on the specs.
If that doesn't clear it up, I'll wait for the pics - preferably also from the pickups, pots, wiring.
BTW, a question on the price - did it follow the Anni model(s), or the AmSeries level?

Looks like you’re in good hands here.
Good luck with your quest and be sure to keep us posted.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I think we all know with that color it will not be an official anniversary strat of either year.
2006 was fenders 60th and all american strats had a medallion on the back of the headstock.
2004 was the anni of the strat and all american strats of that year had the 50th neckplate
The main concern is the neckplate which as afaik did not have a slanted fender logo.
I think that was on strats from an earlier period. :D

Not in GB, for some reason (we've had this discusson before). I currently have 2 x 2006 Strats, and I have had a 2001. None of those p/ups have/had staggered pole-pieces. Don't know about Germany, but could be the same for all Europe...?

Cheers - Peter.

Well thanks for that Peter you guys are always a special case.
They changed from flat to staggered around 2000. Both the 2004 and 2006 frontlines specifically mention it for the american series/standard Strat
I know the early deluxe scns were fairly flat but stand corrected re the american series by your personal experience. :D

DISCONTINUED: 12/2010
COMMENTS: 300 for the European market in 2006,...with a few, (15 or so), leftovers sold in the US in 2010.

I contacted the seller about all this and he told me he bought the guitar while on vacation in the US about five years ago and brought it over to Germany.

So, if this is true, and being that there were only 15 leftovers of this FSR sold in the US in 2010, someone has slaughtered a real unicorn to mate it to 12+ year old body !
Why someone would do this is beyond me...
Must be a super magic body or something ?

First, let's include a link to the other forum this guitar is discussed, with pics:
http://www.strat-talk.com/threads/my-my ... re.459780/

On the specs you got from Fender... I thought the "Chrome Appliqué Fender Logo" is the 3d-looking Deluxe type, but I may be wrong there. But what the hoff do they mean with "Matching Painted Headstock" - on a 721/Natural Strat..?

Anyways, that's no Anniversary model. If you want to investigate deeper (and haven't returned the guitar), it's time to do an autopsy and check the electronics, neck pocket etc.
At this point, I'll give the benefit of the doubt to a body refin on that FSR model...

Hi Hobby - I just purchased a used 2006 American Strat - the online dealer said it was midnight wine - turns out it is Candy cola. Candy cola seems to have a bit more brown in its red finish - my Strat does not - but it does have the metallic sparkle - which makes me believe it is candy cola.
I am just another guy with the Candy cola - midnight wine confusion.
Ken
