What do you think would be the best capo to use to change frets in the middle of a song? I've looked at the Quick Draw on line. It seems to work but looks like it takes a some time setting it up. Also, would the Quick Draw work on the Strat? I'm a new player so any help is appreciated.

The spring-loaded ones work best in that situation.
I use Dunlop's version but there are others.

Dunlop Capos

I swear by the G7th Performance Capo. Very easy to use, in my opinion.

Cheers - Peter.

Thanks for all the tips. I ordered a Quick Draw. It had mixed reviews but the video showed it to be very easy to move up & down the neck. I didn't care for the roller type. It looked too easy to roll off an edge. I'll post later on what I like or dislike about the Quick Draw.

I checked out the Quickdraw just out of curiosity as I had not heard of it before.
That looks neither fast nor easy to my eyes.

The G7th Nashville looks like it works well enough and should be pretty quick, if perhaps a little unsightly with that hardware sticking up like that.

The G7th Performance 2 ... now that looks really slick.
I might just have to get me one.

take a look at Thalia Capos. Not cheap, but very well made, and designed for this kind of use, esp. if you use the teflon pads.

There is no faster capo than using your finger.

I think I have some capos somewhere.

I bought one a about a year or so ago... It works great. The tuning pads to match the fret board radius seems to be the thing here. Intonation is real good. I use Kysers too, and those are ok but you definitely want to make sure they are seated right, fast key changes are not really the thing with capos likee the Kysers.

The Thalia capos come with two sets of tuning pads, one is a rubber sort of material the other is Teflon and they have pads to match just about all the major brands including a pad for Classical guitars

BTW..
I only use any capo on acoustic, almost never when playing electrics... (Like John says, the index finger works great!)

Not for the last 25 years, no. But even then I found a capo way to restricting. It's like someone has stolen half your neck.

As I don't tend to use "Cowboy Chords" I can pretty much transpose most things on the fly.

I use all the chords, including open chords.
There are times when a barre or a triad doesn't have the right voice.
It might very well be the correct chord but it just sounds ..... wrong.
Many times, open chords are not simply the best choice, they're the only choice.
Consequently, I do occasionally use a capo.

I'm liking that Thalia one but there is no WAY I'm shelling out that kind of coin for a capo.
They need make one in Plain Jane Vanilla with no fancy inserts.
Looking at their pricing I get the impression the inserts are where the money is.

I don't use "cowboy chords", unless you need a cowboy chord, then, they are just the thing...

I play around with double capos, one standard, and either a short cut, drop d, or double drop d.

For solo acoustic performing, to me the capo is pretty important, especially in a duo with 2 acoustic players, one using a capo, one playing standard, much better than trying to cut thru the murk of two guys playing the same chord patters. but if you're not going that route, then, no, it's not necessary.. as I mentioned, I never use a capo on electric guitars...
