I am considering a Mod-Shop Stratocaster and maybe a Custom Shop but the latter may be out of my price range.

1) Do they rotate colors in the mod-shop? I'd really like Cayenne Burst of Crimson Transparent but I have no idea if colors rotate annually, quarterly or neverly.

2) I don't care for the red of the 3 color burst and the two color looks to be too abrupt a color change. I see they also offer a Tobacco burst (not in the mod shop but on the HSS Standard Strat) which I have seen in person and like very well. I have not seen a 2 color sunburst and do not know if they are the same but just have a different name or if they are different. Anyone know?

Thanks. I will only buy a color that allows the grain to show through and really want a darker red or even a dark or midnight blue burst which simply isn't offered. The aged cherry is pretty nice but I wish it were a darker red.

There doesn't seem to be many mod-shop-specialist forum members (and since that was limited to US only, even less...), so you probably won't get many expert opinions here.
I think your best info source would be contacting Consumer Relations Department via the support pages: https://support.fender.com/hc/en-us/art ... -Relations

Going Custom Shop level for the color only will be surprisingly pricey.
Curious as always, do you have other special features you want? (Thinking about a custom Fender licensed body or a refinished genuine Fender body as options if the color is the key here.)

That Cayenne Burst (AFAIK) has only been an option on a Select Carved Maple Top Jazzmaster in 2013, and on the current American Elite Dimension Bass - but the marketing pics of that one show very little burst darkening.
You could check out also Antique Burst (#37 on the color chart), Black Cherry Burst (#61) and Midnight Wine Burst (#88), if you're into red and burst. And the MIJ's had a Gunmetal Red Burst (ガンメタル・レッドバースト) on some Jags and Leads.

Dimension basses are no longer produced.

I don't quite get the point of that remark.

First, one can find pics on the web - even discontinued models linger on.

And second (checked today...) the product pages show "American Elite Dimension™ Bass IV HH"; model number 0192901733) and "American Elite Dimension™ Bass V HH"; model number 0193001733 or 0193001728; no mention of those being discontinued.
The five string (728-numbered) is the Cayenne Burst.

Bursts are sprayed by humans. Each one varies. On 3-tone bursts sometimes there's a lot of very strong red, on others there's less red and it's more subdued.

2-tone bursts can be "rim bursts", or the dark color can almost entirely cover the upper horn. The gradation can be gradual or abrupt.

Tobacco burst uses a dark brown as the dark color. 2-tone uses black as the dark color.

Unless you can see the exact body you're buying, there's no way to know what the burst will look like until you get it.

If you go Custom Shop Masterbuilt, you can send the builder pics of bursts you like and ask him to try to come close to that. Not sure if Teambuilt offers that.

Originally fender had a mod room filled with various necks and bodies of an amazing variety and colors.
It was a great idea ...... you could go in and select what you wanted.
I suspect economics now dictate what is available i.e. the limit you see.
It was probably conflicting slightly with the custom idea of the custom shop as well.
There are plenty of new and second hand strats available in a variety of bursts both custom shop and off the line.
I do not see 28 cayenne burst offered by the custom shop and in fact 28 in the shop currently indicates crimson burst.
How about violin burst? :D

Have you seen the 3 color sunburst in person. It's quite stunning and the red is hardly perceptible. It's a nice blend of sunburst and not like it was in past years. A very good transition (at least mine was).
