I recently purchased a mid 80's MIJ Strat with in intention of it being a guitar to tinker with an upgrade here and there. (First guitar I'm trying this with)
My first upgrade looks like it's going to be the tuners and I was wondering what i need to be looking for on my guitar to tell what brand/size/type etc of tuners I'm going to want to buy to make as little modification myself as possible. [img]https://imgur.com/a/uSWR0[img]
(First time using these forums hope these pictures show up if they help)
Thanks a lot for any help at all its appreciated!

Maybe first diagnose what you have, then make a plan on what (if anything) to mod and in what order. Otherwise, a planned upgrade may in fact be a downgrade - and in general, you might try to solve issues with a wrong cure.

Guessing from the pics, that might be a Contemporary series model. The serial (or the beginning letter & number) could help further.
Those four screw holes point to a System 1 string lock - does it have the System trem, too?
And the tuning machines are most likely Gotoh/Japan made, so they're top class quality as they are. An upgrade would IMHO be something like Schaller's original F-series locking versions - they have good technical drawings, so you'd need to compare your tuners to those.

Pic posting: you need to get the picture address (starts with http or https, ends with .jpg) and use the IMG-command with that. Like this:

Why do you want to make a upgrade ? Do you have any issue with tuning or ....?

You may want "better "tuning machines and it is ok but if you have a tuning issue it might be not the tuning machines.

Fender-branded lockers were Pings, not Schallers.

Fender used Sperzel, then Schaller, after they introduced locking tuners - Xhefri's site is useful here http://xhefriguitars.com/page2.html
The Pings are much more recent.

The tuners on the Strat in this thread look like Gotoh, and they're very high quality, so to echo what others have said, what's wrong with the current ones?
If tuning stability is the issue the guitar needs careful and proper setup.
It's very unlikely that the tuners are the problem.

If they are like these that came on my MIJ Squire , they are excellent tuners.

Yep they're reasonable tuners no doubt.
As mentioned because of the type you will have to check which tuners will easily fit.
Without modification you may be able to find some gotos with string lock which are a bit rarer but stewmac have them listed.
The Schallers and the Sperzels are not marked fender but the pings have an F and maybe that is what chromeface means.
Xhefri's is a brilliant piece of work and recommended reading
Using any of those will require drilling etc. :D
