For the first 10 years or so, all Jimmie Vaughans had "MSN6xxxx" serials, even though the model wasn't introduced until '97.

I just assumed that after they ran out of the "MSN6xxxx" decals they would have started using serials that accurately reflected the build date. But in another thread a guy is worried that the serial on his brand new Jimmie Vaughan indicates it was built 6 years ago. (Fender told him their computer says it was built January 2017.)

So could Jimmie Vaughan owners satisfy my curiosity and shed some light on this?

Fender USA generates the records regarding US and Mexican guitars. Fender AU accessed Fender USA's database.

Either that, or Fender AU lied through their teeth and made something up. Really no reason for them to do that -- they sold that guitar to a retailer, and Fender AU got paid from that retailer. Fender AU doesn't care if the customer returns the guitar to the retailer.

*********

Anyway, this is a general question about whether Fender has ever caught up and started using correct serial number date codes on the JV's.

Further research says that they ran out of MSN6xxxx serials sometime after 2005, and then started using MSN7xxxx serials for a few years. (So 1996 and 1997 date codes on guitars built in the 21st century.)

Then the internet trail goes cold.

Sometime around 2010 they switched to the MX code. Dropped the "S"(Signature). "X" is the roman numeral ten.

Not sure if there were any MX0xxxx. From the other thread we know there are MX1xxxx serials. (And an MX1xxxx serial on a guitar claimed to have been assembled January 16, 2017.)

Not sure if there are MX2xxxx, MX3xxxx, MX4xxxx, etc.

While this is sort of a spinoff thread to help settle the question in the other thread, it's also something I've been curious about for 20 years. Fender has never addressed why the Jimmie Vaughan serials were so whacky for so long (and may still be).

In the '80s and early '90s there were some US and Japanese models with confusing/misleading serials. But the Jimmie Vaughan is the only Mexican model with such unreliable serials, and they were unreliable for a really long time.

Just an oddity.

Interesting... I just checked Sweetwater and although they didn't have any in stock their generic pics show an MX11 serial number. Presumably the generic pics aren't that old, so maybe my conspiracy theory IS wrong.

In that other thread I posted Fender USA Customer Service's phone numbers (USA and International numbers) plus a link to the USA Customer Service webpage which has a link to contact them via email. (Doesn't show the email address though, and i don't know if you guys can connect to that page.)

Other than the change from the MSN format to the MX format, there haven't been any other changes to the JV. So there wouldn't necessarily have been any need for them to update their pics since that change.

The format change seems to have happened in 2010. Wondering if the 2010 JV's had MX1xxxx serials, indicating that they had been built in the future. That would be cool -- people could say they started playing their JV before it had even been built.

Hmmmm. Suddenly remembered the SRV Signature was another weird one. Wasn't introduced until late '91 or '92, but the first few years all had SE9xxxx (Signature 1989) serials.

Tripped up a lot of people who thought they had the early Brazilian rosewood versions based on the serial. (And then they'd proudly post pics and people would reply "ummm, dude, that's obviously Pau Ferro".)

Jimmie's tribute to his little brother maybe?

And ooops. When they changed from the letter decade plus first digit year of decade format (E='80s, N='90s, Z='00s) to the US and MX prefixes, it is the first two digits that represent the year.

So MX10xxxx, MX11xxxx, MX12xxxx, etc

Hmm... so now I am pretty convinced Fender are, at the very least, being deceptive and misleading.

If my MX11 was "Created" in 2017 then when were all the MX12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 "Created"????? Any time, any year, any who know when?

I'm afraid I believe that, my premise that Serial numbers DO affect resale value is valid and that Fender AU should have told their retailer the stock they were ordering was labled as MX11 (regardless of when they claim it was created/built/assembled/made) and the retailer should have told me, their cutomer before shipping it. I could then have decided if I was willing to accept the resale issues for the asking price.

I can absolutely assure you I would have chose an MX17 over an MX11 if there was the choice, even if I had written proof that the MX11 was made in 2017. And I think anyone else would make that same decision. Clearly MX17s do exist!

The mere fact that anyone would choose an MX17 labled guitar over an MX11 (everything else being equal) is proof that the serial number does affected value.

I would have chosen the neck that felt best in hand : )

the Jimmie Vaughan is a MIM Fender .. the value variables are pretty much negligible - IMO

Collectability, too, seems uncertain at best - lots of 'em out there

But it's a Sleeper .. a very good value in a working man's blues/rock guitar ..

and if you like a "Soft V" Neck profile - It's suddenly a Great Value in a Good Strat.

Almost a Clapton feel to it .. I have one of each of these mounted now .. 'cause they're my favorites.
