Really. Honest to God. Wrong date codes have always been a JV thang.

Yes, but regardless of the lettering the initial numbers were always a pretty accurate measure of the year they were made (+ - 1yr).

What? No. For the first 10 years they all said they were made in '96. None were made in '96 -- they started in '97. The only way you could identify build date was to check the dates on the bottom of the neck heel and the body&pickguard dates and the pot date codes.

MSN6xxxx Mexican Signature Ninety 6 followed by a serial number.

In 2010 they changed formats.

In the '90s, N + the following number was Fender's serial number date code. N6, N7,N8 (N = Ninety)

In the 2000's, it was Z (Z = zero) followed by a number. Z1 through Z9.

Now it's an X (roman numeral 10) followed by a number. X1, X2, X3.

EXCEPT FOR THE JIMMIE VAUGHANS. For some unexplained reason they didn't conform during their first decade. That's commonly known and easily Googled.

I assumed they fixed that at some point. But obviously they didn't. Fender has no reason to lie to you, and they keep excellent records.

If their computer says 16 Jan 2017, that's when it was assembled.

Please, enjoy your Christmas playing your brand new guitar.

It wasn't made 6 years ago, but even if it was it's still brand new. And even if it was, it's worth exactly as much as if it was made a month ago.

If this is really tearing at you, take the neck and pickguard off.

A cool thing about vintage style slotted tuners is you don't even need to waste a set of strings. Just loosen the strings, lift them out of the slots, then put them back in when you're done.

(With a capo you can do that with regular tuners too. Just loosen the strings then clamp the capo at the nut to keep the strings in place.)

If you're uncomfortable doing that, take it to the retailer where you bought it and ask them to do that for you and show you the date codes.

If you bought it from an online dealer, is there a Fender dealer or tech near you? (They may chatge a nominal fee.)

The bar code sticker inside the pickup cavity says MO4267302.
Does that mean anything to you?

This isn't really a big concern.

Your guitar is now "used". It's worth exactly as much as a 1 year old, 2 year old, 3 year old, 10 year old mint-condition Jimmie Vaughan.

Guitars aren't like cars. They don't lose value every year. First purchase as new is worth more than subsequent used sales, but after initial depreciation the value stays steady.

Plus, you have a sales receipt showing you bought it as a new from an authorized Fender retailer. Even if it's NOS (New Old Stock) it's still "new". Legally, ethically, and in the eyes of any future buyer.

My main issue is... "I wouldn't mind that it was old stock if they were up front about it and provided an appropriate discount. Then I could base my purchase decision on that information."

For the first 5 years of production, forums were flooded with confusion about the JV pickguard.

Fender's website showed it with an 8-screw pickguard (like the original Tex-Mex, before it became the Jimmie Vaughan Tex-Mex Signature).

When people bought them, they wondered if the 11-screw pickguard was a factory mistake, and wondered if that would lower resale or turn it into a more valuable " collectible".

Fender eventually got tired of all the calls and emails to Customer Service and updated the website pics to reflect reality.

??.... mine IS 8 screw and the website shows it as 8 screw?

If you don't believe Fender, of course you won't believe what I posted about JV serials having been unreliable for the whole history of that model.

Just Google "Jimmie Vaughan serial numbers". You'll see that people have been talking about this on various forums for 20 years.

Sorry didn't mean to offend. I would believe you before believing Fender Au (who have $ at stake).
I was basing my info on this site...

I am honestly willing to bet cash money that if Fender's computer says it was built Jan 16, 2017 the date codes and pot codes will support that.

Individual dates may be a few months to maybe a year before that -- build date is when all the components are screwed together. But if the guitar was assembled 6 years ago there would be zero reason for Fender to lie about that.

The warranty takes effect on the day it's sold. And an unsold guitar is "new" until a consumer buys it. They'd tell you if it's been sitting in a warehouse all this time.

(If it had been out on the retailer's salesfloor and people have been playing it for 6 years you'd maybe have reason to complain, even though legally they could sell it as "new". But there's no indication that's the situation.)

But their date codes DON"T say it was built 16th Jan 2017... they say it was 'Created' 16th Jan 2017. You see their is a difference? They are cleverly not saying it was 'built' in 2017.

For all I know it could mean the database entry was create in 2017.

I kind of agree but I have over 25 guitars (mostly Les Pauls and Strats) and I buy and sell a lot, so I know how selling a guitar works.

You advertise it in the local trading post and every enquiry asks "what is the serial number", so they can determine it's age. If I try to tell them it is not a 2011 they will reasonably asume I am trying to trick them. Even if I show my receipt (which I would not want to do if I am asking a high price or bought it very cheap) they will quite rightly assume it was old stock.

In my experience, regardless of the condition, age does affect resale value even if it shouldn't.

My apologies, I guess I remembered that backwards. It must have been the original TexMex with 11 screws and they carried that pic over for years after they changed the specs and renamed it the Jimmie Vaughan.

I guess the used market is a lot different in Australia than in the US.

Is Fender AU some sort of shady operation? Where would they buy "old stock at a discount"?

"Created" vs "made". Fender builds big batches of JV necks on one production line. Big batches of bodies on another line. Big batches of pickguard assemblies in another room. Then they store them and start building batches of other neck models, other body models, other pickguard assemblies.

Then on the assembly line the workers get their job papers. When they need to build a white JV they go grab the parts and screw them together.

There's some slim possibility your neck actually was made in 2011. But it wasn't attached to a body until this year, as their records show.

And ooops. When they changed from the letter decade plus first digit year of decade format (E='80s, N='90s, Z='00s) to the US and MX prefixes, it is the first two digits that represent the year.

So MX10xxxx, MX11xxxx, MX12xxxx, etc
