I bought a new Jimmy Vaughan strat a couple of weeks ago, online and love the guitar but I was very surprised to see the serial number indicated it was manufactured in 2011! MX11266xxx. A 'brand new' 6 year old guitar?

I called the retailer and they new nothing about it being old stock and said they ordered it from Fender Australia as a new, current model guitar.

I then contacted Fender Australia who claimed it was made on the 16th Jan 2017, and that I should ignore the serial number as they are not accurate and not an indication of when a guitar was made.

This seemed a bit hard to believe especially when it was 6 years out of sync. When I told him I was concerned about the resale value, as everyone dates guitars by their serial numbers and mine is already 6 years old. He said I should tell any prospective buyer to contact Fender and they would confirm it was a 2017 model.

I was not really happy with his explanation or suggestion and asked if I could have some sort of written proof from Fender. So, he sent me a screen shot of his database look-up that showed my serial number as being 'Created' on the 16th of Jan 2017. He went on to claim 'Created' was the same as manufactured.

This all sounds so shonky to me. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Do you think it is true... or is it very old stock being bought cheap by the Australian distributor, who then tries to convince the retailers and the customers that it was made this year.

Nothing is true IMO

I know what you mean, but 'new' just means nobody else has owned it, as far as I can see. In England I've often bought 'new' guitars that were a couple of years old.

The oldest was a 'new' US Ovation from a very reputable store in London, on which the strings were rusty, and the frets & board (although not actually worn) clearly needed a lot of TLC. But there wasn't any doubt that it had never been sold, and I got it for a good price because I was happy to clean it up myself. The serial number showed it was 4 or 5 years old, as I recall, but it didn't worry me - probably because the shop never tried to tell me it was 'new' new. They admitted it'd hung about for years, perhaps not surprising when the Far Eastern Ovations were so much cheaper. I would imagine they sold it to me for cost in the finish!

But agreed you're not quite in the same boat. Have you run the serial number past Fender Consumer Relations? That'd be interesting!

Cheers - Peter.

Thanks for your email.

I understand your concern, but from the information I have access to it appears as though the build for that serial number was completed at the factory on the 16th of January 2017.

Whilst the serial numbering scheme can be almost linear for most Mexican and USA built models, not only is there significant overlap year-to-year but it will often differ for artist models and Fender Special Run instruments.

In future, should you decide to sell the Jimmy Vaughan Stratocaster, you can be confident advertising it as a 2017 instrument as that is when the build was completed.

If you have any questions or require further information please let me know.

Regards,

Mike.

The below image is a snapshot from our online inventory system:

This is taken from an internal source of instrument information for Fender distributors worldwide, where “Date Created” is the day the particular instrument was completed.

Please keep in mind when looking for information on the internet that in general dating by serial number will only ever be a guide, and there are always exceptions to the common rules so it is best to check with us direct.

If yourself or any potential buyer was to contact Fender directly in the future from anywhere in the world regarding this guitar they will receive the same information.

Regards,

Mike.

This guitar was only received by the retailer the day before I ordered it. They didn't even unpack it from Fenders packaging before I got it, so it was not sitting at the retailer and I don't think it was even sitting at the Australian wholesaler for 6 years. I still suspect Fender USA cleared out so old stock to Australia at presumably a cheap price but Fender Au is trying to palm them off as current builds.

I wouldn't mind that it was old stock if they were up front about it and provided an appropriate discount. Then I could base my purchase decision on that information.

Fender Mexican serial numbers

MX11 +6 digits = 2011
MX16 + 6 digits = 2016

Yes I know.... that is why I questioned it. My nuber is MX11266699

See posts above for Fender Australia's unconvincing response.

It is almost impossible for me to access the Fender USA site - it keeps redirecting to the Australian site. I too would be interested to see what Fender USA says about the serial number. If someone in the US would like to submit it for me and post their reply, I would be greatfull.

As long as (1) the guitar seems perfectly brand new, and (2) there have not been any differences in the model since '11, what is the big deal? It is six years closer to be "vintage"...
: )

For the first 10 years of production, all Jimmie Vaughan Sigs had MSN6xxxx serials. Even though their first year of production was '97.

Really. Honest to God. Wrong date codes have always been a JV thang.

I'm curious when they dropped the "S" (MSN6xxx = "M"exican "S"ignature '96).

When they ran out of MSN6 decals the next batch also started with "MS" but I don't remember the year code. But that also ran for several years.

Same for me, it redirecting to France (?) site and I'm in Canada

Is it because I'm french speaking Canadian ? Should we change some set up here ( user Controls panel ) in the forum to access to Fender USA ?

Wish of our American friend can write to Fender

Take the pickguard and neck off and check the date codes.

If you're uncomfortable doing that, take it to the retailer where you bought it and ask them to do that for you and show you the date codes.

If you bought it from an online dealer, is there a Fender dealer or tech near you? (They may chatge a nominal fee.)
