Okay so here's the deal

Just had my offer of $700 accepted for a "1991 fender American standard strat/highway one hybrid"

So basically it's listed as a partscaster because he supposedly combined a highway one body and the rest of the guitar (the neck, electronics, etc) are from a 1991 standard strat.

Does this sound legit? When I get it, how can I verify that it's real, meaning that all the parts are genuine fender USA parts as he is claiming? I know you can check the serial number and the neck for red flags and so on and so forth... but what else could I do? Are "partscasters" typically fake? And if so are they fake meaning that they are squier or that they're a Chinese copy? Lemme know what you all think, id be happy to include some pics of the strat

Also. To help pay for this I'm gonna sell my mexi strat. Black, rosewood fingerboard, mint condition. How much would a place like guitar center give me?

With no photos , how can we help you ?

You have to learn how to reconize what kind of parts this guitar have.

$700 it is not a deal for a part caster,.
I won't buy this guitar, you can find a all original Fender for this amount or $100 more wich is a better deal

Original ad is here: https://reverb.com/item/7161142-fender- ... r-sunburst

Generally speaking, a partscaster can be anything. From Clapton's Blackie to a total fake.
This guitar looks legit and seems to fit what the seller claims. Inside pics are missing, so the 'original electronics' can't be verified - and neck pocket markings might shed more light to the body age (etc.).
You'll have to evaluate the price for yourself - Strat prices vary a lot depending on which part of the globe you live in.
A guitar as advertised vs. the money you spent - are you totally happy with the result is all that matters.

On selling the Mexican Strat, all guitar (/pawn) shops and such are just about the worst choice - they need to make profit, so they pay you less. Try selling it straight to a fellow player.

Those cases have become somewhat sought after. I paid $40 for one 12 years ago but now they're selling for $100 or more. Seen a few hit $150.

Neck is real. Body looks real. As said no way to tell about the electronics from the pics, but I get the feel that the seller built himself a nice guitar so probably didn't skimp there.

Very nice natural aging. I really dig it. That's the sort of thing that increases desirability for some people but lowers value for other people.

To build your own partsocaster of that quality and buy a red label case would easily cost you that much.

So if that guitar pushes your buttons , if it's the partsocaster you'd build if you were going to build one, if you find the wear attractive like I do, it's a reasonable purchase.

Be aware that if you decide to sell it, you may not get that much for it unless you find someone who wants that particular combination of parts.

But if you disassemble it and sell everything individually you'd most likely get your money back.

Oh, for your MIM, Guitar Center will give you roughly half of what they'll resell it for. They'll base their resell price on what those sell for on eBay and Reverb.

So you'll get about twice as much by selling it yourself on Craigslist, Reverb, or eBay.

Balance that against convenience. You might wait a long time for a buyer. You might have to weed out flakes, scammers, and shady buyers. You might have to package the guitar and ship it. The seller might dispute the condition of the guitar and PayPal might take the payment out of your account until the dispute is settled. (And lately there are PayPal horror stories where the buyer gets his money back and keeps the merchandise and the seller is totally screwed.)

Guitar Center will make you a low ball offer, but they'll put cash money in your hand. And then it's their problem if the guitar hangs on the wall for a year before someone buys it.

FYI for the OP
For future reference, if you ever have any questions at all about a guitar you are considering from a distance, those questions should be asked, answered and the answers checked and verified by a trusted source long before you ever say, "I bought a guitar off Reverb," or words to that effect.

You might angrily think that doesn't help squat right now but it might help to prevent there being a next time.
As the old saying goes, look before you leap.

Used MIM Fender Standard Stratocaster's on Guitar Center's web site (in EXCELLENT CONDITION) are going for $399.99 to $499.99 (U.S. Dollars) as of 5:05pm. Central Daylight Savings Time on December 27th., 2017
They will give you EXACTALLY 50% of that.
So; to Guitar Center, your axe (in excellent condition) is worth $199.995 to $249.995---may get a bit more if you use it as "in-store" credit. They are F'ing IMPOSSIBLE to deal with dude....they WILL double their money, or they won't buy it, PERIOD.

P.S.- Music/Guitar Stores, or Pawn Shops apply the same exact philosophy.

Most pawn shops won't give you anything near 50% of the value of a guitar or amp. Unless you're really good at haggling/negotiating.

Yes, financially you'll always do better selling a guitar yourself rather than selling it to a store for them to resell it. Always.

And sometimes you'll put up an ad and sell your guitar the same day. It's certainly worth putting a free ad on Craigslist.

----------------

To be fair to the stores, they have costs and risks. Sometimes used guitars hang for months or even years. Sometimes used guitars have issues they didn't notice during the initial inspection. Sometimes they buy a guitar that's stolen and the cops confiscate it and they're out the money they paid for it. They have paperwork, accounting, salaries and rent to pay for. It's not really highway robbery.

You know the strings, straps, books, extended warranties stores sell? They sell those for twice what they paid too. It's how retail stays in business.

(Extended warranties are more like 90% profit.)

And I would be mentally ready for the very bottom of that scale, or maybe even a touch less. A new MIM Standard's normal price is $600 at GC. But they often have "special runs" for $500 (and sometimes less) if you are even just a little patient. They had this guitar for $500 last week (just as an example):
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender/Special-Edition-Standard-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar.gc

As for the guitar you bought, the price seems okay ... if everything turns out legit. I bet the seller was ecstatic when you bought it, though. Having neck and bodies that didn't originally go together and having been "heavily played" both hurt desirability a lot. It is like selling a house with an "unfinished basement" ... half your buyers won't even consider it. The other thing, too, is that there are good fakes out there too that will pass the "picture test" made by people who know what we look for. So many in fact, I no longer consider buying used gear when I know nothing about the seller ... Just me, though ... but I admit to a paranoid leaning (haha).
