Hi, I'm looking at a custom shop 56 timemachine relic, however the serial number on the neck plate says it's NOS. I contacted fender and they also state that the serial number is for a custom shop timemachine NOS. However, on the COA it says that it's a 56 timemachine relic BUT it also shows the serial number for a NOS.
Is it common for the custom shop to make mistakes like this? Should I be concerned?
Thanks
Dave

Hi there just wondering how you initially found the serial was nos before you went to fender.
It should start with R on a time machine.
Got any pics?
What you say is unusual esp if the floor shop traveller reports NOS.
Mistakes are made but are rare. :D

I'm confused by your post. The serial number on the COA should match the serial number on the neck.

And neither serial number should indicate whether it's a Closet Classic, NOS model, or Relic. That should be only in the model name on the COA.

Note that "relic" is stamped into the neck pickup cavity on all the Time Machines, whether they received the relic treatment or not. (So people couldn't try to pass them off as actual vintage guitars.)

The neck plate has the same number as the COA. The COA says "56 stratocaster relic". When i give the number the the fender online guy and he runs the number, he says the guitar left the fender custom shop as a "NOS". I opened the tremlo back cover and it has relic stamped into the guitar. It doesn't look like a diy relic job.

Thanks
Dave

Ah ok.
Most of those bodies are stamped relic just below the pu cavity however if you look at the neck pickup cavity itself there is usually the correct stamp there. e.g nos for new old stock cc for closet classic and relic for relic
As mentioned unusual but not unheard of.
If the cert and serial match and all else looks legit I would not get to worried.
Detailed photos would help to confirm it all looks ok. :D
