Sorry to create such confusion, I was trying to say that Fender's initial run of the series was "a bit" over relic'ed on the maple fret boards. Nothing to do w/ whatsoever w/ what the original posted guitar was.
A reference video of the original look.

Some were worse than others and they were pretty inconsistent. I don't recall what year they reverted the series to a less relic'ed fret board.

Cool link, thanks for that. I agree that the maple neck looks a bit over done and manufactured. You can also see the sand paper marks where they rubbed the lacquer away on the top of the body. And I don't like the pick rash on the Tele either. It was either that or another video and the back of the Strat was pretty poor as well. I think you get the points on that observation :-).

As a related note, I found it really difficult to get good reference pictures of authentic worn guitars to copy when I did Odee. It seemed that the majority of the worn guitar images on the interweb were relics. There is no point copying a relic/fake as that is like playing Chinese Whispers.

It should also be noted that different players will create real damage to a guitar in different ways subject to their playing style. As I wasn't entirely happy with the references I found I spent a lot of time studying my playing style, where I contacted with the guitar, to try to created what my guitar might look like if I had had it for 40 years.

Relic guitars are just like an old, worn and comfortable pair of jeans...

...that another dude wore and sold to you. No, not for me.

This relic is ugly...

The word "ugly" is a compliment to that guitar. A fake POS with the WORST-EVER relic job ... horrible.
