Hi all,

I'm interested in buying an American Standard (SN: Z00 49829). From the pictures it looks legit, haven't played it yet - but before I travel out to see it I am a little concerned as the color goes. It is a two tone sunburst, relic (please see the ad link for pictures). Can't find any information that there was a 2000 series with relic coloring, could this be a fake, or someone changed it to relic. Any opinion would be appreciated. Thanks!

:)

While the guitar looks like it could well be a MIA of the period the relic job looks after market.

While having been surprised recently by a particular factory "Road Worn" offering I am pretty certain that in the case of this guitar the vandalism wasn't carried out by Fender.

It is almost certainly the prime indication of a DIY Relic.

What winds me up the most though is when a 15 - 20 year old specification guitar is made to look like it has been around for 50 years. It is just vandalism and makes no sense at all.

I really like the look of a legitimate relic and admire the skill of those who can produce a guitar which looks like it could actually be from the time it is trying to represent. It is a skill and art form in its own right... This one isn't though.

Why anyone would want to try and make a 17 year old guitar look like it was 50+ years old (and do it very badly ) is beyond me

Why use a guitar with a 2 point trem and modern backplate , to try and achieve that ???????

Got to agree, couldn't trash a guitar myself. I bought a pre-owned AV65 Strat a few weeks ago. It is a 2015 one and the flash coat has already started checking, yet that's natural due to the finish and perfectly acceptable imo. I imagaine my AV 52 Tele will go the same way as that's also a flash coat and is designed to age. My other Guitars are Poly finishes so will have no such issues. For example I have a 94 Strat and it just looks like it's lost a bit of it's glossy shine over the years yet still looks as good as you would expect. However the best relics I have ever seen was by a guy online who makes replicas of Status Quo's two Telecasters that the guys use, mind you they are what they are, perfect replicas for the hard core fans and collectors.

To the best of my knowledge, "American Standards" have never been available as relics.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
