I'm just trying to make the decision of whether to get a Classic Player or American Standard. I know the Player is MIM but it's got American pickups on it, plus a lot of other great features. But, you just can't beat the American feel. The price for the two is almost the same. From personal experience, which one?

In my opinion, the American Standard has three noteworthy advantages over the Classic Player:
1) 22-fret neck instead of 21 (in addition, the MIA neck has the hand-rolled edges, etc.)
2) American Standard comes with that beautiful new case, instead of a gig bag
3) Any comparable MIA guitar will hold its value better over its MIM counterpart

It sounds like you like the feel of the MIA Strat better, so go with that.
I liked the feel of the Classic player better (and the tinted neck) so that was my choice. It's has an american neck as well as pickups. It's an awsome guitar, but don't let me sway you.

Over here the American Standard costs almost twice as much as the CP 50's, so that's an easy choice for me. If similarly priced, I'd go for the Standard, but not without actually playing both first.

I have a CP '50s and a MIA (older model) and the CP is my main Strat right now. The neck has a great feel (unlike most MIMs) and the tinted Maple looks amazing...it also comes with Custom Shop pickups ('57 / '62s) and "custom pickup switching" (wired so that you can use neck and bridge pups at the same time). I swapped out the electronics for EMGs, though, but I'm hanging on to the Customs. It does come down to personal preference.

I got my CP used for $620, plus a free Tweed hardshell case. It pays to shop around ;)

I like the neckplate

BTW- CP is all American parts, but assembled in Mexico.

Right. To my hands, the modern American necks are the best thing Fender has yet done in that field, especially at the price point. I am one of those boringly average people for whom a C shape with rolled edges is pretty much it. Also, American guitars tend to have a polyurethane finish rather than the polyester usually (not always) found on MIMs - if that is something that matters to you.

However, on this and another thread several people who's opinions are well worth listening to have good and sensible things to say about the virtues of the upper reaches of the MIM range - Deluxe, Classic Player, certain sig guitars, and so forth.

Don't at all discount Mexican guitars - where an instrument is made is not the critical factor. But MIA Standard and the various MIMs are significantly different in specs: your hands and ears are what count. As always, try it and see...

Cheers - C
