Hello all,
I just bought my firs true American fender start.
Its the new pro series.
3 tone sunburst with a maple fret board.
To make the story short,
I specifically requested an unopened box, completely new guitar as sent from fender and on top of the I requested it to be 2017 make.
Once i got to the store I was so hyped I didn't check the serial number and the only odd thing I did realize that there was no graphic sticker with the model name on the fret guard film.
Once I got home I realized it was a 2016, specifically august 2016.
My questions:
1. Is there less value in a 2016 than a 2017 ?
2. This is a 2017 model, how come the guitar was made august 2016 ?
3. Is there allways a graphic sticker on the pick guard film on every new fender ?
4. The pickups did not have a film or cover over them, is this an indication they were pealed off, or some arrive without film on the pickups ?
5. The pickups are all tilted way down on the low E side and way up on the high E, is this a normal fender setup?
sorry for any bad English, it inst my native language.
Thank you so much for any time you took in reading this and/or replying me with information.
Any input would be highly appreciated.
Thank you

Welcome to the Forum gals ! An interesting first post. Congratulations, an American Pro Stratocaster is a thing of beauty for sure. Looking forward to seeing what the responses will be to your questions as I have been thinking about a guitar purchase from Fender as well but wouldn't want to be disappointed by not receiving exactly what I ordered. There are many guitar guru's here who know more than I about such things. Above all have fun here and enjoy your new Stratocaster..

Not an expert, but I'll give this a go anyways.

1. Is there less value in a 2016 than a 2017?
Not a significant difference in the near future. And, since 2016 was the first AmPro year, in the long run those may get a small price lift.

2. This is a 2017 model, how come the guitar was made august 2016?
The calendar year and the Fender year have always overlapped some months.

3. Is there allways a graphic sticker on the pick guard film on every new fender?
4. The pickups did not have a film or cover over them, is this an indication they were pealed off, or some arrive without film on the pickups?
To both: I don't know - always is such a strong word, and Fender has a history of exceptions and all kinds of anomalies. I don't regard these to be definitive proof of anything. http://www2.fender.com/experience/tech- ... uard-film/

5. The pickups are all tilted way down on the low E side and way up on the high E, is this a normal fender setup?
Again, that isn't definitive proof of anything. I've seen many new Strats like that, and many with level pickups. Anyways, pickup height is a setup issue.

Generally speaking, stores sell a guitar model, not a year model. There may be exceptional circumstances - like big model changes from year to year, or one buys a guitar made in a special year (child's birth year etc.).
I don't quite get your reasons for the "2017 make" & "unopened", seems almost like you're suspecting the store of foul play. Maybe a little more background?

Thanks for the replies and the input.
I actually do suspect the store, since i specifically requester 2017 and after realizing i got a 2016 the seller said there was no way he could have known because the serial number is not written on the outside box.
Once I start getting lied to I start suspecting.
I did not want a guitar from the stores floor.

Aren't American models supposed to come full setup from the factory ?

Thanks again for all that input.
less worried now I think

That is the proper setup for the pickups. Check out photos of Strats. From there, you can tweek them to your preference. On the other issues, I would not be happy. It should have the labels and plastic protection. You asked for a 2017 and you did not get that. This is definitely an open box guitar. If you like it, keep it. Otherwise take it back.

Thank you

The was plastic protection on the scratch plate, no decal though. and no plastic protection on the pickups. (what gave me the imprecation it was played maybe a store floor guitar)
I will be returning but Ill have a 2 moth waiting time for a new container.
absolute bummer..
was thinking of just keeping it but i hate being deceived by salesmen. I would like to know the truth about my guitar and history on her path to my hands.

Good stuff fellas. I recall now that a couple of professional guitarists that I know and respect have recommended to me an outfit named Sweetwater that they choose to buy their gear from with no issues. A guitar and case that I received earlier this year I found out were purchased through Amazon, both of those perfect condition and the set-up on the Gretsch was as good as anything I have done. For electric, I purchased a rare guitar and case from Dean Johnson in Fla. There were a few tiny dimples in the finish on the back of the guitar, the front and neck flawless, the case perfect. for a moment I thought about the guitars backside dimples (that doesn't sound right lol) but it came with Mafia pick-ups, hard to come by not easy to install and for hard rock or metal ,well I had to keep her.

Keeping her.
The store agreed to replace with a 2017.. but as far as i understabd there is no point..?
They assured me this was a closed box guitar.. and someone mentioned that the first production year could be sought after.
Opinions please..?
I must decide today.

That first-year-builts mention was mine, and given in a slightly humorous tone - I don't think that the possible price difference between a 2016 and a 2017 AmPro would make anyone rich.

The key about keeping/replacing is you. Will you, in years to come, be fully satisfied with this guitar - feel a rush of joy every time you play it. Or will you always have a nagging little devil on your shoulder, saying that the other guitar at the end of the rainbow would have been better.

@jmattis - Very good answer.

@gals - only you can determine this. The year of production is not a big deal. You could argue that the first production guitars may have "bugaboos" and the later guitars will sort that out. On the other hand, if you sell, someone may think a later production guitar is better than an earlier one. There's really no material difference.

I don't know if this is an online transaction or the dealer has these guitars in stock. If you can do a side by side (A/B) comparison, you owe it to yourself to spend as much time as possible with each guitar. Look at every little detail. Either way, you'll be OK, but don't make your decision on a perceived market value difference.

Thank you all for the replies.
Appreciate the time you take into my worries.

The thing is I must return my guitar and wait up to two weeks (maybe less) for the new container to arrive.
So no A/B :(

I'm fearing having gone through all this and end up with one I like less...
Though I DO want a 2017.. don't even know why that bothers me I got a 2016.

They have a rudimentary setup, but it can always be bettered.
I encountered an American Special just the other day, and while it played well enough, the action up at the dusty end was higher I'd have liked.

The replacement will be in Monday.
The 2016 is with me :) They agreed for me to hold on to her till the replacement arrives, they requested that I wont play her and I'm living u to that request.. arrrr

I will update once all is decided.

Thanks for asking and replying.

Thanks to everyone who gave the inputs, that was what made me stand up and request the chance for the A/B comparison.
