So I just bought a used stratocaster road worn guitar which was fitted with 0.12 strings. So I changed them to 0.10. I assumed I had to change the setup a bit, but now it's mostly unplayable, and I'm not sure what I have to do. The strings have quite a bit of clearance over the pick ups, but they don't have any clearance at all towards the headstock. So when I play the strings buzz quite a bit because they touch the nearby frets. I hope I have explained the problem good enough! Anybody have a clue about what I should try? :)

I'd put my money on replacing the nut. The grooves to accommodate the 12s are probably too deep for the 10s and are causing the buzz. An inexpensive fix, but maybe a setup is also in order.

In my experience, too low nut slots are seldom a problem. (Remember zero fret guitars..?)

But the nut slot height is easy to quick-check. Press the string on the third fret, test if a piece of ordinary copy paper will glide nicely between the string and the first fret.

If yes, the slots aren't too deep, and the guitar is just in dire need of a full setup. Switching from a .012" set to .010" set means that the string tension diminishes about one third...

It would be a good idea to use a pro - maintaining a good setup is a lot easier than creating one.
But if you DIY, follow the steps in the Strat Setup Guide in the order given. Basically, trem/relief/string height/pickup height/intonation.
