I just wanted to open this topic in hopes to get some ideas...

1) How can u make your own aside from using stickers?
2) Where is a good place to get them made & is it expensive?
3) Can I get some sort of printer that can do it from my own pc?

Metal pickguards? I wonder if they have an impact on the tone. Its well known that some of the tele's bridge pickups' uniqueness is derived from the metal surrounding it. I wonder if this would have a similar impact?

Hello Highbinder,

Good question, I don't have a
tried and true answer.

I have also seen
diamondplate and
brass pickguards with
no reported effects.

I suppose El Dorado
may answer better
as he is a player himself

Cheers.

There has to be more options or opinions out there than this.

Oh, OK: I'll rise to that bait. A natty way to go is to buy a couple of different contrasting types of wood veneer - available for sale to cabinet makers and craft & hobbie folks - and make your own multi-ply pickguard. You could do alternating layers of beech and rosewood veneer, for instance, for a BWBW type construction. Or top the whole thing off with a nice rare figure grain: spalted maple, say, or burr walnut.

For craftsman authenticity you should really use hide glue to stick those layers of veneer together - but white carpenter's glue would be absolutely fine. You must press the sheets between flat heavy weights while they're drying, to avoid warping - a stack of heavy books would do fine.

Then, if you are handy with a Dremel you can buy a collared 45 degree routing bit for it and then just use an existing pickguard as a template / jig to guide the router around and cut out your new 'guard. Little bit of effort to get the pickup holes and control slots just right, and make it professional looking. A few coats of aerosol clearcoat (nitro, polyurethane or acrylic car finish), rub down and buff. Presto, job done!

A very stylish and unique pickguard is yours. And you can do as many as your supplier can provide you with interesting and attractive grained veneers. Eat your heart out, tortoiseshell!

Howzat? Cheers - C

Check out this thread of mine. Check the links to the picture of my LP.
http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11165

I used formica (With a plexiglass backing cause formica is very brittle).

For the record, its not an easy mod, but can be well worth it IMO..
