I was going to put locking tuners on my MIM strat, witch has standard tuners now. I was wondering if those standard tuners would fit on my MIM strat witch has vintage tuners on it? (You know how you can see the little screws on the back of the headstock, would it cover them up?) Thank you for any help.

You would have to drill out the holes to fit the die cast tuners where you had the "vintage" ones.

There are two sizes of holes drilled in pegheads for tuners: 11/32 inch and 13/32 inch, the latter more commonly refered to as 10 mm.

Tuners called "vintage" usually fit the smaller holes. Most modern guitars tend to have 10 mm holes, unless they are "vintage spec" reissues. But those are not hard and fast rules.

In short, take one of your tuners off and measure the size of hole you have and then shop for new machines that will fit.

It is quite easy to use little bushing inserts to fit vintage tuners into modern holes. On the other hand, if you want to put modern tuners into the smaller holes you have to enlarge those holes. That is a mod that goes wrong very easily indeed, unless you use the correct tool, a "cello peghole reamer". Sod's law: that is a very expensive tool and you are only likely ever to use it once or twice.

Much, much better to buy tuners that fit your existing pegholes. You can buy locking tuners for either sized hole: come back to me if you have problems finding the right ones. But measure your holes first.

Cheers - C
