I personally string all my American Fenders with Nickel Plated Steel 11's. A couple of guitars I own still get 10's but usually with a heavier low string (.10-.52). I've never tried anything heavier than 11's or lighter than 9's.
As far as bass strings go, once again Nickel plated Steel, but a .45-.105 guage for the four strings (I tried some DR's that were just stainless and they were far too bright for my taste), and .30-.126 for the Six-string. I'm still playing around with Five string gauges.Image

I just recently switched from Fender Strings. Whenever I was jamming with anyone, I seemed to always break strings (Mostly the 3rd string, but others as well). I smoothed out the individual bridges with fine Emory paper, and put a light coat of 3 in 1 oil on the bridges, but I was still breaking strings (and I'm not a heavy handed player). Finally I made the switch to D'Addario string (on the recommendation of a Fender tech), and I haven't broken a string since.

diaddario are a great all round string, this past month i've been experimenting with different brands, elixir, ernie ball, fender and rotosound. What ive found is there isn't much in em, the main difference is the surface smoothness. elixir are the smoothest and rotosound the roughest. ernieball fender and diaddario are all much the same feel wise. The problem with repeat breakages that alot of people dont realize is that it could just be down to a duff batch, try the manufacturer out again in a month or two.

I was experiencing some of those breakages over a period of years. On some jams, I would replace 3 strings in one session. That does not make one popular with the other people. Once I made the change......no more breaking strings.

Forgot to mention that I only use D'Addario strings. I worked a tour last year as a guitar tech for a band that had a DR deal and their strings were a pain to deal with. The winding was so inconsistent that there would sometimes be gaps so wide, you could see the string core.... not even in a spot near a bridge saddle or nut where you might be able to justify such a thing happening. The winding on the heavier strings would sometimes separate at the bridge saddle, lowering the height of the string just enough to throw the intonation out. I'm pretty particular when I'm responsible for someone's guitars and they are playing in front of a few thousand people and those DR's just didn't cut it. Their bass strings were alright, but the 10-49's and the 10-52's were junk. D'Addario all the way.

It surprises me that you stayed loyal to the brand as long as you did. I haven't broke a string in 3 months and i cant remember when the time before that was. As soon as one goes i switch brand. Im currently running diaddario 10's on my hotrod, ernie 11's on my mahogany strat, elixir 11s on my rr3 and js30 dinky and fender 9s on my Ltd. I do change set every 40 odd hours of playing though.

The only reason the guitars say buy fender super bullets because they want you to buy their strings, yes the aren't very good strings, I like DR strings. Right now I have DR blues strings and one washburn string. I use standard washburn strings or fender strings usually though because target and walmart are just around the corner.

I stuck with the Fender strings, because the manual said to use them. At first I thought that strats could ONLY use the super bullets, then I later found that they can also use the standard type strings, with the donut ends.

where are you getting the breaks, at the saddle or is the ball/bullet breaking off? when i put bullets on i tin the ball/string joint just to secure it a bit more.

I have tried most of the major brands, and sometimes buy a set of something different to try. I keep going back to Dean Markley Blue Steel and Flatwounds.
