I wanted to get the john mayer one but it was way too expensive so I got an american standard my question is I put a john mayer pick guard on it the screw above the middle pick up is a little to the right I had to make a new hole but I didn't take my strings off to put the new pick guard on aside from that there is one or 2 screws around the pick guard that are crooked..... Should I go to the store and let a professional set this guitar back up or should I be ok with what I have?

PS. Does taking the back plate off help or hurt or do most guitarist just do it?

First of all, congratulations on the new American Standard. I'm not sure what pick-guard you bought to replace the existing one, but it's certainly not unheard of that you should have to make some new holes. Fender is usually pretty good about that stuff when it comes to the American Guitars, but unless you get the actual Fender replacement part, there is always going to be a slight difference. As far as whether you should have someone do it professionally, that all depends on how comfortable you feel doing it yourself. Also, if you're satisfied with the way the guitar looks/feels with a couple of screws slightly off-line then there's no reason to bother making any more changes. The most important thing for the fit of a pick-guard is that the pickups themselves are aligned correctly (another problem with some aftermarket parts). As long as the pole pieces still line up with the strings and the guard is secure, that's all that really matters.

When it comes to the back plate, it's all a matter of opinion. As a matter of fact there is a thread somewhere on this forum that discusses the same subject. I personally keep mine off on the strats that I play the most, just for ease of access but, again that is just my preference.(The screw are only there so I won't lose them)Image

vintage style pickgaurd won't fit even replacing a new standard pickgaurd.
