Hi, I need some help setting up my 2015 Mexican strat. When I first got it my action was so high it was almost unplayable. I since blocked off the tremolo and lowered the saddles an ungodly amount to help the action. I've adjusted my truss rod to .02" relief at the 9th fret or so. I still am displeased with how high the action is. I've never set up a strat so any help or inquiry would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi

I have no idea where you are located, but if you happen to be in the UK, more so in Northern England, I can wholeheartedly recommend a guitar tech who set up my two MiMs perfectly. Now both MiMs are a joy to use. Admittedly I took the Fiesta Red MiM a stage further by adding a Wilkinson bridge which was set up by a noted tech which allied to the CS 57/62 pups has made this my favourite Strat ahead of a CS Fiesta Red and a Deluxe Fiesta Red.

The action on both make them impossible for me to put down.

It may be the frets, or someone really stacked the nut, or any number of things. You sound like you know what you're doing, but you can't beat an experienced tech.

I vote for a pro setup, too - something is really messed up, and the background info on the guitar and your skills is too limited, help via web could lead to more problems.

That said, and if you really insist on DIY:
If the trem is now blocked/decked (= lays flat against the body), and the saddles are as low as they go, it could be your neck angle is wrong and the guitar needs a shim. If you don't know how, leave it to a pro.
Oh, two things: I'm assuming it's a vintage (six screws) tremolo, and you know how to adjust the trem plate screws. And I'm assuming the neck plate screws are adjusted right - snug but no overly force.

A .02" relief is almost double to what SRV used. NOBODY needs more relief than he did.
Adjust everything to Fender recommendations first, and check how the guitar plays with those. Then tweak to your own preferences.

If the neck hasn't been removed, it's doubtful it needs any addition of shim(s).

I was only giving one possibility - there are others, but based on the info given I bet on neck angle (and/or loose neck screws). Here, we don't know the history of the guitar (2015 to 2017), and the .02" relief sort of eliminates the possibility of a back-bowed neck...
And I've met quite a few Fenders, straight from the factory, which have needed a shim [size=85](not shim to play at their best. And somehow I don't think the Micro-Tilt™ mechanism was invented only to help setups at the factory. 8)

But it would be nice to know the outcome, Reidp. What was the problem, is the guitar now OK?

I haven't found a someone to set it up yet I've done some more tweaking with it and let the wood adjust to the truss rod change. Its now enjoyable to play ,but still just not the best. In the future I will probably take it to someone. Thanks for all the responses!!
