Can anyone help with info to these guitars? I have an opportunity to buy one but there isn't much info out . Seems from a time before custom shop was a retail division of fender.

Its a Fender Custom Shop from October 1995,

Custom Clapton Stratocaster with serial to suit the date. It doesn't have the Eric Clapton Signature on the headstock like the newer ones have. It was sent from factory to Yamano in Japan.

Any info would be appreciated

You could try the forum's Let's talk Custom Shop section, but the good people there might also ask for pics and enquire about the COA...

So far, the instrument could be anything from fake to the real deal. AFAIK, it should have the signature, though.

Custom Claptons didn't surface until 2004 though Eric played custom-built Stratocasters since 1986/87.

Masterbuilt EC Customs made after 1994 lack off the signature on the head as specified by old slowhand himself. The TBX pot has been removed from his personal axes as of March 2000.

We would LOVE to see pictures of this.

Hi all, saw this post and joined up to continue the conversation.

I was lucky enough to score this guitar, it's up there with the best Strats I've played; I've spent some time with some Masterbuilts and pre-CBS.

I did a side-by-side with several (mainly MIJ, some modded) on the day and the Clapton slayed them all.

Here's a link to the original ad, complete with lots of photos:

https://topshelfinstruments.com.au/products/used-fender-custom-shop-clapton-stratocaster-olympic-white-1995

I emailed Fender to try and verify the story but they didn't have any detailed records apart from the serial number corresponding to a Yamano order. Maybe someone remembered the guitar/s from that run, or maybe someone embellished the story (Topshelf got the story from the previous owner) but that doesn't matter, I didn't get the guitar for the story.

Keen to hear your thoughts :)

You could try emailing John Page directly or contacting him through his Facebook page. He made it and may remember details about it.

Wow, that's pretty cool. It is like getting as close to having one of Clapton's guitars without actually owning one. How much was it?

Great idea, I'll do just that. Thanks!

Totally. The dude at the shop that was selling it kept on putting it away in it's case so he didn't get tempted to keep it!

They had it on the market for 3750AUD, so pretty much 3000USD. I ended up trading a rare PRS for it plus a cash adjustment their way.
