First time poster, longtime lurker. I bought a '67 Japanese Strat reissue, sunburst. Based on the outer appearance (big headstock, two string trees) I know this is a MIJ 67 Reissue. Also have the STB-67EX stamp. But the model no. stamp looks to have been removed, along with the date that was taken off the neck and the model that looks like someone tried fading off the neck. There was no serial number on the bottom of the neck just up from the body, you can see where it was sanded off.

I took it to my local and very reliable shop and they said they think it's a '96 and stock. I think it's an alder body with a thin poly sunburst. Any information inside the body has also been removed. The paint feels a bit rough at the bottom of the pickup cavities. Pickups look like a cheap single coil alnico, same with the pots I'm posting some photos, if any of you can give me any info on this guitar based on what you see (I've never owned an MIJ), I'd appreciate it. The photo of the end of the neck, sorry about the shadow at the top.

I can't see your pics on the forum.
Try this method; the pic address starts with https and ends in .jpg:

Ah dang it. I'll fix it. Sorry about that. I thought that was what I did but apparently not.

The difference is, as far as I understand the logic of imagehoster and forummaster web wizzards, you have the image location and I used the image address. Or something.

The ['s replaced with ('s on the examples for clarity - or something...

Best I can tell, this is a mid-90s (most likely a 96 according to the owner of my local shop), no serial number (was sanded off) and most of the stamps taken off except for the basic 67 stamp - STB-67EX meaning it was a MIJ exported 67 reissue. There's a red circle stamp with what looks to be an S in the middle, the rest I can't tell.

This is from the best I can tell and if anyone can give me info, thank you: The body is alder with the thin poly paint job. The pickups look bottom of the barrel cheap along with the electronics, which look pretty cheap. I heard some came with Texas Specials, these are definitely not those but I don't know what's in there. I put some nail polish on the finish in a safe place to see if it would rub off, but it didn't, which makes me think it's poly. Also is kind of gunked up like glue would be (epoxy) in the bottom of the pickup cavities. They also stripped out everything inside the body cavities as as far as any indicators like stamps or stickers or anything else.

The stamp etc. removing operation made me suspicious, but so far it seems OK - a couple more pics (whole guitar front/back, headstock, wiring & pickup bottoms, bridge...) might clear things up.

Anyways, an exact date doesn't make or break a guitar, so just enjoy it, even if you get no more info.

The 1996ish could be right, but the same model was made since the end of eighties, so I'd not rule out any year between (about) 1988 and 1997. Anything in the neck end? If it's stock, the saddles should be the FENDER/FENDER type, for any year.
The pickup stagger about fits the typical "ST Vintage" pattern, but the bottom side & wiring pics missing, this is just a guess.
Very few MIJ's had a nitro finish, so the poly is far more likely. The 'goo/glue' in the routings could be conductive paint.

And, as a curiosity, the ST-67 stamped model was apparently sold as a '68 in the US marketing lingo - because of Jimi, of course.

Sorry for the delay. There's no date marked on the heel of the neck, it was sanded off. Has the transition logo with big head stock, don't know about the pickups. They sound a bit off to me most of the time. If you can tell me what they are I appreciate it. The neck is super thin, thinnest neck I've played on anything. Like a very thin C. Here's some more photos.

And can I take off that second string tree without any problems?

OK, those pics confirm my first thoughts on the pickups. They're "ST Vintage", with plastic wires, one piece plastic bobbin and staggered AlNiCo magnets - the coil wire should have a reddish shade.

I won't deny the '96 estimate, but can't find anything to confirm it, either. But the pickups, I think (not sure on that) would put the age of the guitar to 1995 or earlier.
Anyways, the tuners, logo, two string trees, slim neck, dots, all other features fit the ST-67 so "legit check OK".

IMHO, those pickups (used in a lot of MIJ/CIJ Strats) sound quite nice, so the a bit off sound you experience might be just a pickup height issue (or setup in general, or electronics in general...). They're not very hot, rather vintage, singing and bell like... In all Strat pickups, that's the type I prefer, but if you're into hot/Texas Special/rails, YMMV.

The string tree issue depends.
If you have issues with the tuning stability, start with a nut check/fix/lube and a general full setup.
Those tuners don't need a lot of string winds, so the two string trees idea comes from there; string angle over the nut etc. And in general, some Strats play just fine without any string trees, others need two - depends on the player, string gauge nut and so on, too.
You just have to test what suits the guitar and yourself best.
BTW, why do you want to take the other tree off?

And another thing, the B in STB-67 seems to be a bit mysterious, some say it's finish, I lean towards nut widths. Would you mind measuring if the nut width is 1 5/8" (41,275mm) on this one?

Thanks for all the info. Sorry for the long wait. Yes the nut width is 1 5/8. I’m considering selling it. The neck is just so thin and I don’t like the idea of putting another one on. Having no serial code hurts but it seems clear to be a 67 reissue. I might give it a shot and get the best set up on it I can and see if If that improves anything.

Thanks for the info on the pickups. I love vintage pickups, not the overwound sound, so I’d like to get these dialed in if possible.

I was going to take the string tree off because I just prefer not having one one, but I really don’t want to alter the neck.
