Hi all
New to this forum hoping for help :)
I have been offered a great looking 1974 Sunburst Stratocaster, but the body has a strange difference in colour! It is as if the paint is split in two, dividing the body in a darker and a lighter part. I have no idea of why and also what it does to the value of the guitar. I off course do not want to pay over price for this guitar, so I really hope some one in here can guide me :)
Perhabs there is a good story behind?

You can see the guitars colours on the images below :)

Thanks a million in advance!!

If there was a guitar that begged to have the pick-guard removed, it is this one ...

That's one that missed the respray booth.
There's a reason why there are so many factory finished black instruments from the 70s - they've been resprayed because of finishing faults like the one you pictured.

Personally, I wouldn't let something like that put me off.
If it plays well and sounds good it will be good.
Barring the odd colouring it appears to be a sound instrument.

A very interesting and, seemingly, original guitar.

I agree with the above in that it would be interesting to see if the finish is as it left the factory or if it has changed due to the light.

My assumption is someone picked up the black gun instead of clear and started spraying. Instead of complete the coat he changed half way through. When the guitar was shiny it perhaps wasn't so obvious.

As perhaps an example of a fault which slipped through the net (and has remained unchanged for 40 years) it might even be worth more.

Or is it a two-piece body where one piece of wood has 'taken' the paint differently? And over the years this is what's happened? Just a guess.

No, it wouldn't put me off. What would is needing Eddie Hall or Brian Shaw to get it out of the case!

Cheers - Peter.

It does appear to be a two piece but the seam looks to be down the middle.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Wow, if that was a coin it would be called a "mint error" and it would bring a very good price. But it is from the middle of the CBS era and is just poor quality control.

I think it does look kind of cool. If it plays well and the price is good why not. If you buy it, try to make up some kind of story behind it, something you "heard" that could not be proven or disproven. That would give it a special character.

+1 to all who like it.

I think that 'flaw' is cool as hell. Never seen a relic'd guitar duplicate that affect.
