So I've had this issue for a long time now where my tone controls only seem to have two sounds - sort of like on and off. When at 1 it sounds like someone has covered my cabinet with a towel. I even took it to a tech last year to fix it and they apparently changed the pots to logarithmic but I couldn't hear a difference still. Now I've ordered a ssl5 for my bridge I thought it might be a good opportunity to try and fix it. Just for note I have the second tone control to control the middle and bridge. Any ideas on what the issue could be?

Any diagnose would be just guessing, with the "apparently changed the pots", and other unknown unknowns like wiring mods, model of the guitar and the wiring diagram used now...

But, since you're going to put the SD in the bridge, it might be easiest to redo the whole wiring while the guitar is on the work bench (that would also fix a bad solder joint if that's the cause of the current problem..). Replace all parts you don't trust - a multimeter comes in handy if you want to test them.

And sorry for the late answer - probably the 'first poster delay' before your message was published.

They should be log.
Linear give the effect you describe however impossible to judge what is going on without pics.
Which pot causes the issue and was the bridge/mid combo original? :D
