Hello,

I have a MiM Stratocaster with the installed PW 29 tremolo block.
I would like to substitute it with VINTAGE Gotoh 56mm GOLD tremolo. The question: does this GOTOH tremolo will fit to the current body, assuming that PW 29 might has a smaller spacing (2-1/16) which should corresponds to 54 mm tremolo compared to the Gotoh (56 mm)?

Thanks you!

Gleb

I'd like to know which model & which year MIM Strat we're talking about here, would help us help you...

But there's a gold Fender bridge (vintage trem, narrow spacing) available e.g. from darrenriley.com
Part number is 0059561000 if you google other sellers.
That should be as close to a drop-in replacement as you can get (= expect some fitting work anyway).

The Gotoh model you're talking about is not meant to be a straight-on replacement, so there are more issues to be expected. Take the easy way.

Is it possible to expect some advantages of that tremolo compared to PW29 or it is the same guy under the different colour? :D

Haven't tested that golden wonder, but the trem block is smaller=lighter than the PW29 'fat high mass trem block' - both are zinc alloy, though.

My understanding is that the PW29 can be installed into the gold trem - if you do the swap, you could confirm or deny that.

In general, some believe the trem block makes the sound of a Strat. I wouldn't necessarily share that opinion.

From the physical point of view tremolo (the material of block) influences on the sustain. E.g. my Mexican strat has amazed sustain :-) the only problem which I have - with the hole on the block for tremolo arm which was broken and does not accept any of the arms :-)

I have a '95-'96 MIM Strat that had a similar problem. I tried a few different Fender arms and I had to screw them in so many turns that they barely cleared the knobs. That was no good so I tried a thicker diameter Ibanez arm and it works perfectly. There's no plastic tip on the Ibanez arm but I actually prefer the thickness of it. I would guess that the threads of the Fender arms are 8-32 and the threads of the Ibanez arm is 10-32, using American standards. That equates to a number 8 or 10 diameter and 32 threads per inch. Once again, those are just my best guesses at the sizes. I didn't measure the threads.
You could take your guitar into your favorite shop and ask to try some Ibanez arms. If they work for you like they did for me you'll be all set.
Good luck!

FMIC's thread sizes are 10-32 or 10-24 imperial and 5 or 6 mm metric.
Better check what one has than ruin the arm or the block...

I've come to agree with you on that, JM. I've tried a couple of different blocks on my American Special and come back to the standard PW-36. I don't know its composition other than a magnet sticks to it, but - for me - it sounds great on that particular guitar. That's what counts, I think, rather than the price of it!

Cheers - Peter.
