The Hendrix Monterey Strat shown at Summer NAMM is finally on the Fender website, and judging by the specs, it appears to be just a standard Classic 60s Strat with the Monterey paint job reproduced by stickers. I think I'd rather have my Hendrix with the American 65 pickups with reverse magnet stagger and reverse slant bridge pickup. I do wish they had made a rosewood neck version, though.

Not the UK one yet but perhaps in due course?

I saw that today, and when I did I checked out what accessories it came with and it is only a Deluxe Gig Bag, I thought for sure they would have put in a can of Ronsonol lighter fluid

Available to order from GAK.
Unusual for a Mexican Strat, the body is polyurethane finsh not polyester.

And Andertons.

While it looks quite cool I am sure it will be bought by more as art, to hang on a wall, than as a music tool.

In many respect the Hendrix back to front, round the right way, version would be a better option for the full Hendrix tone. At least it is configured the same way.

Greg will make anything sound good.
Just wondering about the stickers...
I see it has Pau Ferro and hear fender mexi strats now are going to have fretboards made of that rather than rosewood.
Prob got something to do with Cites and importing rosewood back into the US...

Greg is the living embodiment of a little cliché I roll out from time to time.
Forget about everything else folks, the tone is in your hands.

The Pau Ferro shift is everything to do with Cites, and Fender were well aware that Rosewood was going to hit the Cites list sooner or later.
SRV himself signed off on Pau Ferro for his signature guitar.

The paperwork Cites generates must be horrendous.
Andertons (a little known UK purveyor of guitar finery) has stopped shipping guitars back to the US, because they find the paperwork required to ship a guitar back to the US is a nightmare.
They buy premium guitar from Fender it's no problem - the importer (Fender UK) has the appropriate import license.
They sell back into the US market (something which they used to do occasionally) they require an export license, which they don't currently (nor are likely to) hold.

It's bureaucracy gone mad.
The musical instrument manufacturing industry just scratches the surface of rare and endangered wood species usage covered by Cites - furniture production is far and away the main offender.

Back on topic now.
Greg can make any guitar sound like Jimi (or Jimmy Page, or EC, or Mark Knopfler, or Chet).
Forget all of the associated nonsense - the tone is in your hands, folks. The tone is in your hands.
You want to makes sounds like John Frusciante? Go and put the time in practising and playing.
You want to sound like Jimi? Do likewise.

Indeed so, and you can bet CITES has little or no impact on furniture manufacture within, and for sale in, the Far East.

So I keep looking at it and thinking "Do I want one?" For the the sake of my sanity (and credit card bill) I am pleased to confirm that the answer is "NO!"

When it comes down to it what you are getting is a £700 MiM 60's Classic with £100 of paint and a flashy heel plate.

Does any of this £100 additional goodness make it sound or play better? I think probably not.

Yes, I'm grumpy....get over it.

Hi,

I've had noticed Fender will offer new finishes for their flagship lines and another four signature models this year, including George Harrison's Rosewood Telecaster.

The Elites got ebony fingerboards and 2 new colour options: Champagne and Ocean Turquoise, with the choice of brown tortoise, red shell or aged white pearloid pickguards on select models. Dimension basses are excluded from the list as their production is currently phased out.

I prefer the paint job on this Painted Player one, and there are options to have it done on a better instrument also.

I'm obviously missing something here. Rather than pay £809 for a MiM Classic Series with a fancy paint job (and special neck plate) - even though a normal Classic Series is £699 - you want to pay £900 for a £440 Squier Classic Vibe with a fancy paint job?

There is the option to pay £1300 for the same paint job on the £700 Classic 60's MiM of course.

I think I have the same one you do. Amazing guitar. I didn't think I'd love the pickups or the reverse slant bridge as much as I do.

Regarding Rosewood vs. Pau Ferro, I think we need to be patient with Fender here. If the underlying cause of the shift is that the rosewood forests are being depleted, then I for one would be interested in alternatives. Sure there is an element of bureaucratic b.s. that has infiltrated the whole process, but the reason it exists is rational.
