Please could one of you very clever people give me a bit more information on this guitar I just bought.

http://imgur.com/a/5BkAb

From the serial number it seems to be a 1984-87 mij fender, but I just wanted to check if there was any other way to verify as there's nothing stamped on the neck pocket. Would appreciate any information, got it at (I think) a good price and I think it's gonna be my main player for the foreseeable future!

I don't claim to be in the answerer group you describe, but...

You have nice detail pics, but the full shots, headstock back, neck joint back are what I'd still like to see.
At the moment, I'm thinking a Contemporary Standard 22, or a neck from that with a Squier body.
And post the pics on the forum, like this:

BTW, a lot of first post/delayed publish on the forum popping up this weekend from August 12/13/14... Quite late, I'd say.

During the mid 80's Fender Japan did a lot of Re-Issues ('57, '62, '68, '72, etc.). They had bins full of parts for each model. HOWEVER, when they were not making the Re-Issues they would just gather parts to make Standard Stratocasters.
The pickguard and neck on your guitar look to be '62 Re-Issue parts. The tuners look to be '72 Re-Issue style. I'm not seeing some of the other markings on the neck/neck pocket that would have been on the Re-Issue models. In my opinion you have a mid 80's MIJ Standard Stratocaster.
Mid 80's MIJ Stratocasters are considered to some of the best guitars made by Fender during that time period and after. I personally own 3 1986 MIJ Fender Strats ('57RI, '68RI, and '72RI).
In the condition it is in I would say a good starting price would be around $400-$500.

I find this description a bit hard to swallow, mirrored against the Fender Japan situation and the Japanese work ethics of the mid-80's. Even the Squiers of that era were quality made...

I did not say they were poorly made. They used a the same parts that were used on the Re-Issues just not in the same combination. Every MIJ Fender Strat that I have played from that era were awesome guitars. I have owned about 8 of them.
There was a website at one time that had details on MIJ Fender Strats of that era. That is where my info came from. I'll have to check to see if it's back up.

You're most likely talking about the John Blackman site, which (after appearing on several webhosts) is sadly gone. That stratconnection page mainly quotes info from Mr. Blackman.
But there's a workaround; WebArchive.org John Blackman Contemporary Stratocasters & links there on.
For the industrious ones, it could be wise to make a print of those pages...
The MIJ models and some info are on the wikipedia Contemporary page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Co ... ster_Japan

And on the guitar of the topic, based on those good but too few pics, I yet can't say if the body and electronics come from an eighties MIJ, or a nineties Squier MISomewhere... The nonexistent stamps in the neck pocket worry me, although I can't say for sure that every MIJ eighties Fender would have an ST-stamp.
